August 26, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, BC) - C's RF Matt Newman proved to be too much for the Boise Hawks to handle as the Vancouver Canadians salvaged the finale of their five-game series with a 5-1 victory on Sunday afternoon in front of a sellout crowd of 5,157 at Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium.
Newman smacked a two-run double off Boise reliever RHP Su-Min Jung to cap a three-run bottom of the 5th inning which snapped a 1-1 tie, and added his sixth home run of the summer off RHP Tyler Bremer in the bottom of the seventh. The home run was Newman's fourth in nine games against the Hawks this season.
With the Canadians trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, DH Art Charles hit a home run-his sixth of the season-off of Boise starter RHP Felix Pena. An inning later, 1B Balbino Fuenmayor gave the C's the lead for good with a run-scoring single to cash in 3B Kellen Sweeney (double).
RHP Javier Avendano, the C's Co-Pitcher of the Year along with RHP Taylor Cole, pitched five shutout innings in relief to improve to 7-1 on the season. Avendano gave up four hits and struck out seven Hawks batters.
Notes: Canadians RHP Roberto Osuna, who pitched three innings, was making his first start since August 12th. The right-hander gave up one run on three hits before being relieved by RHP Javier Avendano... Sunday afternoon's sellout marks the 13th of the season for the Canadians at Scotiabank Field, including the last seven in a row... The Canadians also set a 4th straight franchise attendance record with Sunday's sellout as 146,641 fans crammed Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium through 37 home dates (4,445avg.)... RF Matt Newman has 14 RBIs in nine games versus Boise in 2012... The Eugene Emeralds (19-14) and Canadians entered Sunday's action tied for first place. The Emeralds will play the Tri-City Dust Devils at 7:15pm on Sunday night.
