Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, BC) - A five-run top of the fourth inning was plenty enough for the Boise Hawks, who hung on to defeat the Vancouver Canadians 8-6 on Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd of 5,157 at Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium.
Despite RHP Taylor Cole's dominant 5.2 scoreless innings in relief, the Canadians could not capitalize as they fell behind early and often with Boise jumping out to an 8-2 advantage off C's starter LHP Daniel Norris after just four innings.
The Canadians were led offensively by RF Carlos Ramirez, who smacked his second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the bottom of the second inning which gave Vancouver a 2-1 lead. The Hawks, however, led by 3B Jeimer Candelario's two doubles and three RBIs, would score seven runs over the next two innings to take control of the contest.
In the loss, Canadians 1B Balbino Fuenmayor collected three hits, raising his batting average to a team-leading .283. 2B Christian Lopes=B8 meanwhile, went 3-for-4 to up his average to .471 through four games with the C's. It was Vancouver's third loss to Boise four games into this series which wraps up on Sunday afternoon.
Notes: Saturday night's start marked the Northwest League debut for LHP Daniel Norris, who was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the second round (74th overall) in the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft... RHP Taylor Cole, who pitched in relief for the first time this season after making 10 starts, allowed just one hit over 5.2 innings and lowered his ERA to 0.92... The C's drop to 19-14 in the second half, falling into a first-place tie with the Eugene Emeralds (19-14), who defeated the Tri-City Dust Devils 5-4 in 11 innings. The C's, though, own the tie-breaker over the Emeralds with six games remaining in the season.
