Vancouver Whitecaps FC News Release
VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC remind everyone that five thousand (5,000) $50 season ticket deposits for Vancouver Major League Soccer go on sale at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow - Saturday, March 21 - visit vancouverMLS2011.com.
On Wednesday, March 18, Vancouver was announced as the 17th Major League Soccer franchise. The team will join MLS for the 2011 season. Since the announcement two days ago, demand for Whitecaps 2009 season tickets has skyrocketed, and the Vancouver MLS 2011 launch video has become one of YouTube's most viewed sports videos in Canada.
The 2009 MLS season opened last night on Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field, as Seattle Sounders FC cruised to a 3-0 victory over New York Red Bulls in front of 32,523 fans. Thursday's match was Seattle's inaugural season opener as an MLS club and they have capped season ticket sales at 22,000.
This morning, MLS made another announcement from Portland, Oregon, as it named Portland Timbers as the league's 18th franchise. The Timbers are also scheduled to kick-off their first season in 2011.
"The atmosphere at Qwest Field was absolutely electric last night," said Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi. "And now the addition of Portland makes the Pacific Northwest 'soccer triumvirate' complete. We have always enjoyed great rivalries with Seattle and Portland, right back to the North American Soccer League days of 30,000 plus fans in BC Place. Throw Toronto FC into the mix, along with all the other major city competition, and it makes for an altogether incredible experience."
Toronto FC - Canada's first MLS team - have sold out every home game during their first two seasons, capped season tickets at 16,000, and have a season ticket waiting list of over 14,000.
Soccer fans are encouraged to secure their 2011 season tickets as soon as possible, with this round of deposits capped at 5,000 and only 16,500 season tickets in total being made available for Vancouver's inaugural season in MLS. For more information, visit vancouverMLS2011.com.
