Prince George Cougars News Release
PRINCE GEORGE, BC- The Vancouver Giants (18-23-2-0) earned the weekend sweep over the Prince George Cougars (18-25-2-1) with their 3-1 victory Saturday at the CN Centre.
Prince George is now just one point ahead of the Giants in the Western Conference standings, with Vancouver holding three games in hand.
For the second straight night, Carter MacAdams scored the only goal for Prince George and once again it came in the final minute of regulation.
Special teams were the difference on Saturday, as the Giants scored once on the power play and picked up two shorthanded goals, the last into an empty net.
The Cougars are winless in five (0-4-1-0) and now prepare for three-straight against the Kelowna Rockets (26-11-1-3) starting Wednesday.
GAME RECAP
For the second night in a row, the Giants opened the scoring on the power play. After a scoreless first period, Fabian Lysell put Vancouver ahead 1-0 at 3:19 of the second.
It stayed 1-0 up until the late stages of the middle frame and the turning point of the game came during a Cougars' power play.
Prince George, down 1-0 with three minutes left in the second, went on the man advantage with a chance to tie it. Unfortunately, things went south. Vancouver's Payton Mount scored shorthanded at 17:52 as he squeezed his shot from the right wing through Brennan's pads to put Vancouver up 2-0 through 40 minutes.
The Giants' Ty Thorpe scored an empty net goal with two minutes left in regulation to put Vancouver up 3-0. Ethan Samson had his stick implode into two on his one-time attempt from the blue line, which allowed Thorpe a clear shot at the open net from centre ice.
For the second consecutive night, MacAdams spoiled Jesper Vikman's shutout bid. MacAdams was credited with his eighth goal at 19:28 after he got his stick to Keaton Dowhaniuk's point shot. The goal was initially given to Caden Brown.
NOTES
The Cougars have scored two or fewer goals in their last 10 games. Prince George is now 5-6-0-0 in 11 games against Vancouver. Their record against the B.C. Division slips to 15-16-0-1. Connor Bowie played in his 200th career regular season game on Saturday. Jonas Brøndberg returned to the lineup after missing the last three games with a lower body injury.
