Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - Led by 36 saves from rookie netminder Cooper Michaluk, the Spokane Chiefs dealt the Winterhawks their first regulation loss since Dec. 17, 2021 - also at Spokane - with a 3-2 decision on Saturday night.
Michaluk, who made five saves in a relief showing during Spokane's 9-0 loss to Portland on Wednesday, made his first start between the pipes in the Chiefs' win.
Following a goalie duel in the opening frame, Spokane opened the scoring at 2:12 of the second with Carter Streek's sixth tally of the season. Portland responded five minutes later, though, as Marek Alscher unleashed a seeing-eye shot for his second goal in as many games and sixth of the year.
After Alscher's tying effort, the Chiefs potted a pair to close out the second period and open the third, with Nick McCarry's deflection marker at 13:31 of the middle frame and Kooper Gizowski's second of the year at 5:11 of the third to make it 3-1. Luca Cagnoni brought Portland back within a goal at 10:30, wiring a wrist shot over Michaluk's shoulder for his sixth of the year, but the Chiefs were able to hold off the Winterhawks' late charge to pick up the win.
Winterhawks goaltender Dante Giannuzzi stopped 20 shots in the loss.
The Winterhawks and Chiefs wrap up their five-game series on Tuesday at Spokane.
