Swift Current Broncos News Release

Winnipeg, Man. - The Swift Current Broncos (17-24-4-1) couldn't stay out of the penalty box against the Winnipeg ICE (31-6-2-1) Saturday, taking 12 penalties in an 8-2 loss.

Winnipeg opened the scoring just 1:31 into the game as Ben Zloty fed Connor McClennon a pass in the left circle, and his one timer beat Isaac Poulter over the blocker to give the ICE a 1-0 lead.

Swift Current ran into penalty trouble in the opening period, and the ICE would take advantage to push their lead to 2-0. With Mathew Ward in the box for a double-minor for high sticking, Zloty took a shot from the blue line that was tipped in front by Jakin Smallwood, pushing Winnipeg ahead 2-0 at the 10-minute mark of the first.

After killing off another penalty, the Broncos got a power play of their own with Chase Wheatcroft sent to the box for a double-minor high sticking call. Just 17 seconds into the power play, Sam McGinley sent the puck across the slot for Connor Hvidston, and his one timer beat Daniel Hauser to cut the ICE's lead in half. It was Hvidston's third straight game with a goal.

The Broncos went into the intermission down 2-1 with the shots 13-12 in favour of the ICE.

Winnipeg's offence exploded for three goals in 4:33 to start the second period, quickly jumping out to a 5-1 lead. Penalty trouble continued to hurt the Broncos as the ICE added two more power play goals in the middle frame.

After the ICE pushed their lead to 6-1, Eric Van Impe scored his first as a Bronco to make it 6-2, before the ICE responded under two minutes later to take a 7-2 lead into the second intermission.

The penalties continued in the third period as the Broncos were called for five more penalties, one being a double minor, and the ICE would score on a 5-on-3 to add to their lead and make it 8-2. Reid Dyck took over in the Bronco net in the third period, turning aside 18 of 19 shots in relief.

The Broncos now return home for three games at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex next week, beginning with a Tuesday game against the Brandon Wheat Kings (21-15-3-2).
