Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

WASHINGTON, PA - The Tri-City ValleyCats (28-30) fell subject to a weekend series sweep following a 5-2 loss to the Washington Wild Things (31-27) Sunday evening at Wild Things Park, ending their first-ever visit to their newfound Northeast Division rivals.

Despite out-hitting the Things, 10-8, on the night, the 'Cats stranded nine on-base and could not overcome an early deficit. An RBI double and a wild pitch got the home team on the board in the second, before the 'Cats briefly tied the game at two in an eventful top of the third. Denis Phipps sent home Luis Roman on an RBI single, while Chris Kwitzer scored on one of three hits from Brad Zunica during the next at-bat.

En-route to their seventh straight victory, Washington's answer came immediately, with an error and an RBI single signaling a crooked frame in the home half of the third to give the game its final score. Washington right-hander Daren Osby (3-3) struck out three in five quality innings to take home the win, while closer Zach Strecker nailed down his 13th save of the season during the final frame. Tri-City's Daniel Kreuzer (2-3) took the loss in two-and-two-thirds innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits and striking out four.

The ValleyCats will look to shake off their recent offensive woes by continuing a rigorous road trip during the week. Tri-City will next head north of the border for the first time in club history to face Equipe Quebec in a three-game midweek set, beginning on Tuesday, August 3 at 7:00 PM. The 'Cats will return to Joseph L. Bruno Stadium to host the Sussex County Miners this coming weekend. First pitch on Friday, August 6 is set for 7:00 PM.
