New York Boulders News Release

The New York Boulders took the rubber game of their three-game weekend series in Quebec City, downing Equipe Quebec in a home run derby, 6-6 (5-1), at Stade Canac on Sunday night.

New York had lost Friday night in the first Frontier League game played in Canada, then rebounded to win on Saturday.

Tied at 5-5 through nine innings, each team scored once in the 10th to send the game to the home run derby.

In the top of the 10th, with Kevonte Mitchell starting the inning at second base as per the tiebreaker rule, Zach Kirtley's grounder bounded over the head of Quebec shortstop Gift Ngoepe to plate the go-ahead run. Quebec reliever Evan Rutckyi escaped any further damage by inducing a double play grounder off the bat of Tucker Nathans and then striking out Ryan Ramiz.

In the bottom of the inning, David Glaude opened at second base for Quebec and remained there after New York reliever Tanner Kiest struck out Ngoepe and Jeffry Parra. However, Connor Panas' seeing eye grounder up the middle found its way into centerfield to score Glaude with the tying run. Jesse Hodges followed with a fly out to send the game to the home run derby.

In the home run derby, New York's Ray Hernandez, Nathans and Kirtley outhomered Quebec's Panas, Parra and Ngoepe, 5-1. Hernandez and Nathans hit two apiece for the Boulders, while Kirtley added one. Panas hit the lone home run in the derby for Quebec,

Quebec jumped in front with a run in the first inning. L.P. Pelletier led off against New York's Robby Rowland, who was making his first start in a Boulders' uniform, with a triple. One out later, he scored on a sacrifice fly by Glaude to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

It stayed that way until the top of the fourth when New York evened things at 1-1 on a solo home run by Kirtley, his 11th of the year.

Quebec answered with single runs in the fourth and fifth. In the fourth, a Jesse Hodges' RBI single gave the hosts a 2-1 lead; then Glaude's second sacrifice fly of the night increased their lead to 3-1.

The Boulders hit their second and third home runs of the game in the sixth inning to grab a 4-3 lead. Ramiz followed a Nathans' single with his third homer of the year to knot the contest at 3-3. On Quebec starter Codie Paiva's next pitch, Hernandez blasted his 17th of the season to give New York a one-run lead.

A Kirtley sacrifice fly increased the Boulders' lead to 5-3 in the top of the seventh; but Quebec responded with a two-run single by Glaude, his third and fourth RBI of the evening to square the game at 5-5.

Rowland was effective in his Boulders' debut, going four innings and allowing two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out one. Luke Burton followed Rowland to the mound and surrendered three runs in 2 1/3 frames. Kiest finished up by tossing 3 1/3, allowing one run on two hits while walking two and striking out seven.

Meanwhile, Paiva went 6 1/3 for Quebec and allowed five runs on seven hits. Frank Moscatiello threw a scoreless 1 2/3 frames for Quebec before giving way to Rutckyi, who went two stanzas and allowed only Mitchell to score.
