FISHKILL, NY - One day after playing arguably their best game of the season, the Renegades were dominated in every facet of Sunday's game at Dutchess Stadium, losing to the Tri-City ValleyCats 10-0.
Tri-City started the scoring in the first as league homerun leader Stephen Wrenn (7) stepped to the plate and smacked a homerun over the leftfield wall to give the ValleyCats a 2-0 lead. The leftfielder drove in runs number 12 and 13 on the year after second baseman Ryne Birk doubled to lead off the game.
Speaking of Birk, he would do damage of his own in the third. With one out, he hit his first homer of the year; a high-arching shot over the rightfield wall to give Tri-City a 3-0 lead.
The ValleyCats took complete control of the game thanks to a two-run fourth. After a walk and fielding error put runners at first and second with none out, designated hitter Brauly Mejia singled in Randy Cesar from second. Following an out, shortstop Alex DeGoti singled home first baseman Taylor Jones to give Tri-City a 5-0 lead.
Tri-City added two more runs in the fifth. With one out and a runner at second, Wrenn picked up his third RBI of the game with a double to right. He would later score on a double to left by first baseman Taylor Jones, and the ValleyCats held a 7-0 lead.
Another homerun gave Tri-City two more runs in the sixth. With a runner at second and two out, centerfielder Daz Cameron (2) belted a homer over the leftfield wall to give the ValleyCats a 9-0 lead. The three homeruns given up by Hudson Valley was a single-game high for the season. It also gave Tri-City four homers for the series.
Tri-City added one more run in the ninth as a two-out double to right-center by Jones scored rightfielder Ronnie Dawson from first to make the score 10-0.
The ValleyCats collected 14 hits with everyone in the starting lineup and their lone pinch hitter garnering at least one base knock. Birk, Cameron, Wrenn, and Jones each had two hits with Wrenn driving in three runs for the game and five for the series.
The Renegades collected only four singles, two of them by third baseman Jim Haley.
Taking the loss for Hudson Valley was starter Spencer Moran (1-1) who allowed five runs on six hits in 3.2 innings of work. It was his first rough outing of the year after beginning the season with 11 scoreless innings.
Getting the win for the ValleyCats was Hector Perez (2-0) who fired 5.2 scoreless innings while giving up only two hits in the first. He also struck out six.
Tri-City added two more runs in the fifth. With one out and a runner at second, Wrenn picked up his third RBI of the game with a double to right. He would later score on a double to left by first baseman Taylor Jones, and the ValleyCats held a 7-0 lead.
Hudson Valley heads to Staten Island for the first of a three-game home-and-home series with the Yankees. Travis Ott (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will take the mound for Hudson Valley against Simon De La Rosa (2-0, 4.63 ERA) of the Yankees. First pitch is set for 7:00. The Renegades will come back home on Tuesday for their Independence Day celebration against Staten Island. First-pitch for that game is 7:05 and will be followed by a fireworks show.
