STATEN ISLAND, NY --- Position players Miguel Guzman and Steven Pallares combined to toss four scoreless innings, while Eric Marinez snapped a 6-6 tie with a two-out RBI triple in the top of the 15th inning as the Vermont Lake Monsters outlasted the Staten Island Yankees 7-6 Saturday night at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

The 15-inning game followed eight full innings of a Staten Island 4-1 victory in the completion of a game suspended by rain in the bottom of the first inning on Friday.

In the night's scheduled seven-inning game, both the Lake Monsters and Yankees scored two runs in the seventh inning to send the game to extra innings tied 6-6. But neither team could push another run across the plate until the 15th when Vermont's Tyler Ramirez walked with two outs and scored on Marinez's RBI triple to leftcenter field.

Guzman, who had started the game at catcher and moved to first base in the ninth inning, took over on the mound for Vermont in the 12th inning. He retired the first two batters on fly balls to left before a walk and wild pitch put the winning run at second, but got another flyball to get out of the 12th. He then worked around a two-out single with another flyout to end the 13th.

Pallares, who had started the game in left field and moved to first base in the 12th, relieved Guzman to start the 14th inning and retired the first two batters before back-to-back walks. A popout to second again stranded the winning run at second base and Pallares came back out to pitch the 15th with the lead after the Marinez RBI triple. After a flyball for the first out, Pallares hit Nick Solak and a Manny Alvarez single. But Pallares then struckout Charles Vazquez and got Drew Bridges to flyout to left to end the game.

Guzman and Pallares combined to allow two hits with three walks and a strikeout over their four scoreless innings as Pallares became the first position player in Vermont's 23-year history to be the winning pitcher in a Lake Monsters victory.

JaVon Shelby was 3-for-6 with a walk, run, double and three RBI, including a two-run homer in the third inning for his first professional home run. Jhonny Rodriguez was 2-for-7 with RBI doubles in the first and seventh inning, while Miguel Mercedes was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Alvarez was 5-for-8 with two runs and one RBI for Staten Island, while relievers David Palladino (2-1) took the loss despite allowing just one run on one hit with one walk and six strikeouts over final five innings.

In the completion of Friday's suspended game, the Yankees scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead. Vermont got its only run of the game in the sixth on a two-out solo homer from Mercedes for his third home run of the season, but Drew Bridges had a solo homer for Staten Island in the bottom of the eighth.

Heath Bowers (1-2) allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits with three strikeouts over five innings, but struggled with his control in walking five Yankee batters. Eli White was 2-for-2 with a walk and a double for Vermont, while Luis Barrera was 0-for-3 to snap his 12-game hitting streak.

Vermont (8-8) and Staten Island (12-4) will both be looking to win the three-game series on Sunday night at 7:05 pm before the Lake Monsters head out to Ohio for a three-game series against Mahoning Valley starting on Monday. Vermont returns home to Centennial Field on Friday as they host Batavia for a three-game series July 8-10.
