5,687 Fans on Hand as Spikes Fall to Scrappers, 4-0

STATE COLLEGE, PA - A crowd of 5,687 fans, the largest attendance of the 2016 season, filled Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Sunday night as the State College Spikes' four-game winning streak came to a close with a 4-0 loss to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.

After the game, fans were also thrilled by David "The Bullet" Smith and his one-of-a-kind Human Cannonball act. Smith, who was previously featured on America's Got Talent, flew 142 feet through the air after being shot out of a cannon from second base.

The Spikes (12-5) were held in check by Scrappers (4-13) starter Triston McKenzie (2-1), who allowed four hits and a walk over six scoreless innings. McKenzie also struck out six batters in a winning effort.

Mahoning Valley took the lead in the fourth when Erlin Cerda hit a two-run homer to left field. Cerda collected four hits in the game.

The Scrappers added a run in the sixth when Gabriel Mejia doubled, moved to third on a flyout and scored on a State College error.

Todd Isaacs capped the scoring with a solo home run in the eighth as the Scrappers became the first team to hit two homers in the same game against the Spikes this year. State College pitchers had only allowed one homer on the season prior to Sunday's game.

Jose Martinez was the only Spike with multiple hits in the game. Danny Hudzina added a double to the State College cause.

Carson Cross (1-2) tied a Spikes record with eight innings on the mound, but took the loss. Cross became the sixth Spikes pitcher in club history, and the third in the past week after Bryan Dobzanski and Ronnie Williams, to log eight frames in a single outing. The right-hander gave up all four runs, three of them earned, on five hits, two walks and a hit batsman. Cross also recorded a strikeout.

The Spikes now hit the road for the Fourth of July to start a three-game series at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy, NY against the Tri-City ValleyCats. Right-hander Steven Farinaro (1-0) gets the ball for the 6:30 p.m. matchup. Tri-City's starter is not yet announced.

Following the series against Tri-City, the Spikes return home for a three-game series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park against the Auburn Doubledays (Washington Nationals). Highlights include the Honorary Bench Coach Josiah Viera Bobblehead Giveaway, presented by Northwest, on Saturday, July 9, Military Appreciation Night, presented by Lion Country Kia, featuring a Game-Used Hat Auction to benefit PSU for Local Wounded Warriors and a Mitch Harris Poster Giveaway, on Sunday, July 10, and an appearance by record-setting contortionist The Rubber Boy, presented by 98.7 THE FREQ, on Friday, July 8.
