Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
STATEN ISLAND, NY --- Charles Vazquez's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning snapped a 1-1 tie and led the Staten Island Yankees to a 2-1 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Sunday night at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
A Drew Bridges one-out single and Dom Thompson-Williams two-out walk off Lake Monsters reliever Will Gilbert set the stage for Vazquez, who grounded a single into rightfield off Gilbert to score Bridges with the go ahead run. Staten Island reliever Jonathan Padilla worked around a two-out walk in the ninth inning to earn the win, allowing just one hit with the walk and three strikeouts over four innings.
Vermont had taken a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Eric Marinez led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a groundout before scoring on a Nate Mondou RBI single to rightfield. Mondou went 2-for-3 in the contest, collecting two of the Lake Monsters five hits on the night.
Staten Island tied the game in the fifth off reliever Yordy Alejo with an unearned run when Ricardo Ferreira, who was 3-for-3 with a walk, came around to score from second base when Marinez's throw to first base trying for an inning-ending double play got past first baseman Miguel Mercedes.
Lake Monsters starter Brendan Butler allowed just two hits with three walks and three strikeouts over four scoreless innings to lower the ERA for Vermont starting pitchers to 2.01 through 17 games (overall team ERA also dropped to a league-leading 2.54). Yankees starter Freicer Perez allowed one run on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts over the first five-plus innings.
Vermont (8-9) heads to Niles, Ohio for a three-game series against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers that begins Monday at 7:05 pm. After single games Tuesday and Wednesday, the Lake Monsters will have their first schedule off day of the season on Thursday before beginning a three-game series on Friday at Centennial Field vs. Batavia.
