Auburn Doubledays News Release
The Auburn Doubledays (10-7), Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, crushed the West Virginia Black Bears (9-8), 14-0, on Sunday afternoon from Morgantown, West Virginia. Doubledays first baseman David Kerian picked up four hits and four RBIs in the win.
The Doubledays loaded the bases right off the bat in the top of the first inning. Blake Perkins singled, Nick Banks reached base on an error, and Kelvin Gutierrez singled. After a Tres Barrera pop out, Oliver Ortiz singled to score Blake Perkins and keep the bases loaded as Auburn led, 1-0. David Kerian then singled to left field as Banks and Gutierrez scored and Ortiz advanced to second base to give the Doubledays a 3-0 advantage. Ortiz scored on a ground ball that Jake Jefferies hit up the middle that Black Bears shortstop Erik Forgione misplayed, which put Auburn up 4-0.
Auburn scored four runs again in the second inning. Darryl Florentino walked to lead off the inning. Perkins then doubled to put runners on second and third for Banks. Florentino scored when Banks hit a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Doubledays a 5-0 lead. With Perkins still on second base, Kelvin Gutierrez grounded out to the shortstop position. Perkins was stealing on the play and ended up scoring to extend Auburn's lead to six, 6-0. The Doubledays would score two more runs in the inning as Barrera reached base on a hit by pitch, and the next four batters all singled to give Auburn an 8-0 advantage.
The Doubledays added another run in the fourth inning. Luis Vilorio led off with a double to left field. Vilorio advanced to third base on an Ortiz ground out to second base. Vilorio then scored on a Kerian single to right field to extend Auburn's lead to nine, 9-0.
Auburn lengthened its lead in the fifth inning. Florentino led off with a triple. Perkins then worked a walk. Banks followed with a double into the left-center field gap, which scored Florentino and Perkins to give the Doubledays an 11-0 lead. Banks advanced to third base on the play because of an errant throw by center fielder Sandy Santos. Two batters later, Banks scored when Luis Vilorio hit a sacrifice fly to center field as Auburn's lead extended to 12-0.
The Doubledays added two more runs in the ninth inning. A Dalton Dulin RBI single and a Luis Vilorio RBI ground out both scored runs to give Auburn a 14-0 lead. The 14 runs is a season high for the Doubledays. Auburn also collected 18 hits, which is a season high as well.
Auburn returns home on Monday to begin a three-game series against Lowell. Right-hander Carlos Acevedo will pitch for the Doubledays against Spinners left-hander Enmanuel De Jesus. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from Falcon Park. General Admission tickets are one dollar as part of "Fan Fare Monday" at Falcon Park. Fireworks presented by The Home Depot, SK Post 1324, Finger Lakes News Radio WAUB, and 98.5 WNYR will follow the game as part of an Independence Day celebration at Falcon Park.
