EVANSVILLE, IN - The Tri-City ValleyCats (12-12) dropped the rubber game 6-1, and concluded their three-game set against the Evansville Otters (15-9) at Bosse Field on Thursday.
Jeffrey Baez proved to be a thorn in the ValleyCats side again. Dakota Phillips worked a two-out walk off Garrison Bryant in the first before Baez hit a two-run blast to give the Otters a 2-0 lead.
Bryant issued a solo homer to Noah Myers in the third to make it a 3-0 ballgame.
Evansville blew the game open in the fifth. Ethan Skender singled and Phillips followed up with a double before Baez went yard for the second time to pull the Otters ahead, 6-0.
Tri-City got on the board in the sixth. Carson McCusker led off with a walk against Austin Gossmann. Zach Biermann singled and both baserunners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Aaron Altherr lifted a sac fly to cut the deficit to 6-1. Leoni De La Cruz then entered, and hit Jakob Goldfarb with a pitch. The ValleyCats attempted a double steal but Biermann was thrown out at third. Juan Montes walked and both runners advanced ninety feet on a wild pitch before De La Cruz pitched out of the inning.
Although the sixth was the best opportunity for the 'Cats to strike back, they had two runners on with two outs in the first and fifth innings. After the sixth, Tri-City was held hitless, and were unable to place another runner in scoring position.
Gossman (3-1) earned the win. He went 5.1 innings, giving up one run on five hits, walking three, and striking out six.
