Niles, OH- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers beat the ValleyCats 6-5 thanks to a five run second inning by the Scrappers in front of their home fans at Eastwood Field. The ValleyCats made a two-out ninth inning comeback only to fall short.

Francisco Carballo had a two-run single to key the two-run comeback. Drew Sutton went 3-4 with three singles and two RBI's.

The Scrappers propelled themselves out to an early 5-0 lead off of Tri-City starter Andrew Alvarado. The ValleyCats starter faced seven batters in the first inning and worked his way out of trouble. Mahoning Valley left the bases loaded.

In the second, the Scrappers went to work quickly. With one out, Teo Encarnacion reached on an error by ValleyCats second baseman Drew Sutton. The Scrappers then unleashed three consecutive hits against Alvarado. Brian Finegan, Argenis Reyes, and Marshall Szabo singled. Reyes's single brought home Encarnacion.

The bases were loaded for Wyatt Toregas. He was hit by a pitch and pushed across Finegan. The Scrappers had a quick 2-0 lead.

They continued to score runs in the second. After Toregas was hit by a pitch, Mike Butia smacked a two-run double to extend the lead to 4-0. Chris Gimenez walked and Tim Montgomery grounded into a fielder's choice, where Toregas scored to extend the lead to 5-0.

Mahoning Valley scored another run in the third inning against Alvarado and the ValleyCats. Alvarado finished by giving up six runs in three innings on six hits while walking two and striking out three Scrappers.

Tri-City went to work in chipping away at the 6-0 lead in the fourth inning. Chris Clark started things with two outs. He walked and quickly moved up to second base when Brady Koch singled. Edgar Babilonia followed by reaching on an error by Scrappers shortstop Brian Finegan. The bases were loaded for Drew Sutton.

Sutton responded by roping an RBI single to right field. Clark and Koch scored to make it 6-2.

In the seventh inning, the ValleyCats got another run back. Edgar Babilonia led off with a bunt base hit. Drew Sutton's walk pushed him to second base. Hunter Pence struck out and then Ben Zobrist singled to load up the bases. Mario Garza grounded into a fielder's choice. Zobrist was retired at second base and Babilonia scored to make it 6-3.

In the ninth inning, the ValleyCats put together a late two-out rally. Ben Zobrist walked and Mario Garza singled. Zobrist pulled up at second and went to third when Scrappers right fielder Teo Encarnacion fired an errant throw. Two runners were in scoring position for Francisco Caraballo.

He hit a ground ball up the middle that sneaked into the outfield. Zobrist and Garza scored to make it 6-5. James Cooper came into the game to pinch-run for Caraballo. Kevin Vital grounded out to short to end the game.

The ValleyCats and Scrapers finish their series in Ohio tomorrow night. Evan Englebrook gets the start for Tri-City.
