Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - Zach Collier reached with a single with two outs in the ninth before Sebastian Valle hit the Mark Hamburger offering off the wall in right to win the game 4-3 and collect the second win in a row for the Lakewood BlueClaws against the Hickory Crawdads.
The teams got the bats rolling early in the game as the Crawdads (16-15) got a run on a double off the bat of Erik Morrison to take the early lead, but in the bottom of the inning it was Jim Murphy's second home run of the season that gave the BlueClaws ( a 2-1 lead.
In the second, the Crawdads got the run back as a broken-bat single by David Paisano brought Clark Murphy home and the game would stay tied for a while. Both starting pitchers, Jon Velasquez and Carlos Pimentel settled down and the game remained tied until the sixth.
After a lead-off single, Matt West scored on a RBI-double by Clark Murphy to take a 3-2 (17-13) lead but as the game went to the bottom of the inning, that lead would be short-lived.
After retiring fifteen in a row, since the bottom of the first inning, Pimentel served up a solo home run to Travis d'Arnaud, his fourth of the season, to tie the game at three. This is the second time in the series that d'Arnaud has hit a late game-tying home run and the first time the BlueClaws have hit two home runs in one game.
Jon Velasquez, stuck on five wins, went six innings, allowed five hits and two earned runs while striking out a season-high five. He performed well after what was his worst start of the season against Kannapolis earlier this homestand. He was relieved in the seventh by Santo Hernandez (1-0) and he worked his second successful outing in a row, striking out six in three innings, and picking up his first win of the season.
Pimentel equaled Velasquez going six innings and allowing three runs and striking out five before being relieved by Mark Hamburger who worked the last three innings and allowed the game-winner in the ninth.
The BlueClaws will look to end their season-long homestand on a high note as they play game four of their series with the Crawdads on Tuesday night at 6:35pm. The BlueClaws will call on Tyler Cloyd (2-2), who has allowed just two runs this season in 21 innings at home. He will be opposed by lefty Cliff Springston (2-2).
