CHARLESTON, SC - Jorge De Leon's game-winning RBI-single in the 14th inning and a sextet of Lexington pitchers nipped Charleston, 3-2, in South Atlantic League action Monday night in front of 3,076 fans at Lexington's Applebee's Park.
Tied in the home half of the 14th frame Andrew Siminic smacked a one-out single to left, advanced to second on a ground out and sprinted home when De Leon cracked a single to right that plated the game-winning run.
With the victory, the Legends improve to 18-13 on the season while the RiverDogs drop the first game of the road trip and slip to 16-15.
Charleston jumped to an early 2-0 advantage in the top of the first inning when Carmen Angelini pulled a line drive single to left for Dan Brewer who followed with a double to right that advanced Angelini to third. With runners in scoring position, Abraham Almonte laced a single up the middle that knocked in both Angelini and Brewer for the game's first runs.
The Legends responded in the home half of the first and knotted the game at 2-2 after Jay Austin laced a leadoff double to right and then trotted home whenFederico Hernandez blasted a two-run homer over the right field fence.
Lexington reliever Brian Wabick (1-0) silenced Charleston to one hit and struck out five through three shutout innings to earn the victory.
Charleston reliever Cory Arbiso (1-3) earned the defeat after pitching the final 2.2 innings and was charged with one earned run on four hits and two strikeouts.
RiverDogs starter Andrew Brackman received a hard luck no decision in his longest outing of the season when he allowed two earned runs on seven hits and struck out a season-high nine in eight innings on the mound.
Charleston and Lexington each cracked 12 base knocks in the game, leading the RiverDogs were a quartet with two hits apiece while Hernandez and De Leon each tallied three for the Legends.
The RiverDogs continue their eight-game road trip through Kentucky Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. with Game 2 of a four-game series against the Lexington Legends, an affiliate of the Houston Astros. Charleston sends right-hander Brett Marshall (0-3, 6.66) while Lexington counters with righty Kyle Greenwalt (2-2, 1.86).
