Hagerstown, MD (May 11, 2009) - The Hagerstown Suns erased an early deficit on Monday night at Municipal Stadium and used a pair of three run innings to defeat the West Virginia Power 7-2.
Derek Norris ripped a one-out single in the bottom of the first to score Nick Arata, giving the Suns a 1-0 lead. The Power plated a pair of runs in the top of the third to take their only lead of the game. Jeremy Farrell ripped a two-out double down the left field line to score Quincy Latimore and Robbie Grossman.
Hagerstown's first of two three-run innings came in the fourth. Michael Guerrero stepped in with one out and the bases full, and ripped a single into left field, plating the first two runs before Steven Souza scored the final run of the inning on Chris Curran's base hit. Tyler Moore delivered the dagger in the seventh inning with a three-run homer off Brian Leach.
Austin Garrett (2-1) tossed three scoreless innings of two-hit ball in relief and struck out three batters in a winning effort. Maurice Bankston (1-3) was tagged for four runs on six hits and fanned four over four innings in a losing effort. The Suns bullpen retired the final 11 Power batters of the night.
West Virginia fell to 9-22 after the loss, and the Suns improved to 13-15 with the win. Robbie Grossman went 1-for-4, with a walk and single, improving his on base streak to 18 games. Austin McClune paced the Power with a 2-for-3 performance, reaching three times in four plate appearances.
West Virginia will finish the five game series with the Hagerstown Suns at Municipal Stadium on Tuesday morning. Right hander Duke Welker (0-3, 4.71) will start for the Power and the Suns will counter with right hander Terrence Engles (2-1, 4.05). The first pitch is scheduled for 10:35 AM.
