Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
Montgomery, Ala. - The Jacksonville Suns rallied to tie Tuesday's game at six in the top of the eighth inning, but two runs in the bottom of the frame propelled the home-standing Montgomery Biscuits to an 8-6 victory in front of 2,394 at Riverwalk Stadium.
The loss snapped the Jacksonville winning streak at a Southern League season best eight games. In addition, the Biscuits are now two and a half games behind Jacksonville in the Southern League South Division race with 17 games remaining.
Montgomery opened the scoring early off of Suns starter Heath Totten with two runs in the first inning and three runs in the second. The two first inning runs came from a Jorge Cantu RBI single and a Gabriel Martinez RBI groundout to make it 2-0 Montgomery.
After Tony Abreu belted his third homerun of the season in the top of the second to make it 2-1, the Biscuits went back to work in the home half of the inning as Cantu struck again with a three-run homerun off of the bottom of the scoreboard to open a 5-1 Biscuits lead.
Cantu is on a rehabilitation assignment from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays with an injured left foot suffered when he fouled a ball off of it late in April.
Jacksonville began to chip away at the Montgomery lead beginning with Brad Cresse belting his fourth homerun of the season in the third inning, a solo shot to left field that made it a 5-2 Biscuits lead.
That Montgomery lead held intact through the early part of the night as Biscuits starter Jim Magrane held the Suns to only three hits through the first five innings.
Finally the Suns made more progress in the sixth as Justin Ruggiano walked with the bases loaded to get Jacksonville within 5-3. Tony Abreu then singled to drive in another to cut the Biscuits lead to 5-4.
Montgomery added a run off of Suns reliever Adam Thomas in the seventh on a Jorge Cantu sacrifice fly to extend their lead to 6-4.
The Suns finally tied the game in the eighth inning off of Biscuits reliever Juan Salas, who had allowed only five hits coming into the game. Jacksonville scored two runs on a hard line drive from Tydus Meadows to third base that was misplayed by Montgomery third baseman Gabriel Martinez to tie the game at 6-6.
Unfortunately for Jacksonville the Biscuits added two runs in the home half of the inning on a Matthew Maniscalso RBI groundout and an Adam Thomas wild pitch to finish the scoring at 8-6.
Salas improved to 2-0 in the victory while Thomas fell to 2-2 for Jacksonville.
The Suns and Biscuits continue a crucial five game series with the fourth game Wednesday at 8:05 p.m. ET. RHP Joel Hanrahan will face Montgomery RHP Chris Flinn. Fans can follow the action on AM 930 The Fox or online at jaxsuns.com or milb.com.
