Chattanooga Lookouts News Release

THE LAST GAME- Behind the left arm of Braves' starter Chris Waters, Mississippi downs the Looks, 7-4. Waters (3-3) pitched six strong innings, allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out four, en rout to his third victory of the season.

The Braves jumped on Lookouts' starter Steve Kelly for two runs in the first inning. Luis Hernandez belted a two run shot into the Tennessee State Parks Picnic seats for his first home run of the season.

With the score 2-0 in the Braves favor in the fourth inning, Southern League Hitter of the Week, Noochie Varner sent a solo blast over the batters eye in right center field to bring the Looks within one. However, that was as close as they would get as the Braves exploded for five more runs.

In the sixth, the Braves broke the game open on a three run homer off the bat of Mike Rosamond. The Braves struck again in the seventh for two runs off of Lookouts reliever Eddy Valdez.

The Lookouts scored a run in the seventh after a bases load walk. Then in the eighth, the Looks put two more runs on the board, but couldn't close the deficit in the end. Lookouts starter Steve Kelly suffered the loss after tossing six innings and allowing five runs on seven hits.

THIS DATE IN BASEBALL HISTORY:

1869 - The Cincinnati Red Stockings and a club from Antioch did not play in what was the first rain postponed game in professional baseball.

1942 - In an exhibition game, 22,000 fans watched Satchel Paige pitch five innings as the group beat the Dizzy Dean All-Stars, 8-1. Paige's team also had won a week earlier, 3-1, before 29,000 fans. The two teams were scheduled to meet again on the Fourth of July, but Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis prohibited the game. It seems the teams committed a cardinal sin - - they outdrew major league games.

1986 - Barry Bonds of the Pirates got his first major league hit, a double, against the Dodgers.
