Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

BROOKLYN, NY - Despite a 54-minute rain delay in the top of the seventh inning, the IronBirds kept their pitching intact and shutout the Cyclones, 2-0, on Monday night. RHP Sebastian Vader tossed six shutout frames en route to his first win of the season while INF Tommy Winegardner closed out the game with perfect ninth.

Monday night's contest remained scoreless entering the fourth inning. Facing RHP Julian Hilario, 1B Christian Walker led off the frame with a single into right field. 3B Torsten Boss followed up Walker's single with double to left-center. After SS Joel Hutter struck out swinging, LF Will Howard grounded out to first base but Howard's grounder allowed Walker to score from third.

Pitching with a lead for the first time on the night, Sebastian Vader ran into some trouble in the bottom of the fourth. DH Alex Sanchez led the inning off with a single. Following a Stefan Sabol fly out to center, 1B Jayce Boyd singled and C Jeff Glenn walked to load the bases. 2011 first rounder, Brandon Nimmo, stepped to the plate next for the Cyclones. Vader forced Nimmo to hit a grounder to second base. 2B Creede Simpson quickly fired to second for an out and Joel Hutter completed the double play as his throw just beat Nimmo to first.

The IronBirds added another run in the top of the sixth against Hilario. Christian Walker led the inning with a walk and Torsten Boss doubled to left. Two batters later, Will Howard hit a sac fly to left field. Walker raced home to give Aberdeen a two-run advantage.

Howard had a pair of RBI on Monday night. He entered Monday with two RBI on the season.

With one out in the top of the seventh, the rain began to pick up and the umpires called for the tarp to be placed on the field. After a 54-minute delay, the IronBirds and Cyclones returned to the field.

After RHP Jose Nivar tossed a pair of scoreless frames out of the bullpen, Tommy Winegardner entered in the bottom of the ninth to try to close out the IronBirds victory.

In his second professional relief appearance, Winegardner retired the side in order en route to his first save.

RHP Sebastian Vader (1-4) picked up the win on the night. Vader did not allow a run over a career-high six innings of work. RHP Julian Hilario (0-3) got the loss for Brooklyn.

The IronBirds and Cyclones will close out the two-game series on Tuesday morning with an 11 a.m. contest. RHP David Richardson (1-2, 3.60) will take the hill for Aberdeen while Brooklyn will turn to RHP Rainy Lara (4-1, 3.04).
