
Hanover Handles ValleyCats

TROY, NY-DH Tyler Hanover (3-5) hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning and drove in four runs to lead the Connecticut Tigers (16-19) to a 6-4 win over the Tri-City ValleyCats (25-10) before 2,750 fans at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on Monday night.
With the victory, the Tigers pick up their second win in the season series. Connecticut is now 2-5 against the ValleyCats, the NYPL's best team with a 25-10 record.
Connecticut and Tri-City exchanged runs in the first inning. Hanover doubled and went to third base when C Benett Pickar (0-1) laid down a sacrifice bunt. RF Patrick Smith (3-4) doubled Hanover home for a 1-0 lead. CF Andrew Aplin (1-4) tied the game with a solo home run against Connecticut RHP Edgar De La Rosa (3-1).
De La Rosa tossed five innings and allowed one earned run on five hits to pick up the win.
The Tigers strung together three two-out hits in the fourth inning. 2B Devon Travis (3-5) and 3B Edgar Corcino (1-2) each singled and Hanover hit a three-run home run over the left field wall for a 4-1 lead.
Connecticut scored two runs in the sixth inning to make the score 6-1. Travis singled and moved to third base when LHP Joe Bircher (0-2) threw wide of first base on an errant pick-off attempt. Corcino walked and Hanover hit into a fielder's choice at second base. Corcino was forced out and Travis scored. C Pickar walked and Hanover moved to second base. He scored on a single by CF Jake Stewart for a five-run lead.
The ValleyCats scored a run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by DH Tyler Heineman (1-4) and two runs in the seventh inning on RBI singles by LF Dan Gulbransen (1-4) and SS Joe Sclafoni (2-4) to get within two runs at 6-4.
The Tigers and ValleyCats finish their series on Tuesday morning at 11:05 a.m. RHP Endrys Briceno (2-2, 6.04) starts for the Tigers against RHP Brady Rodgers (3-1, 1.37) for the ValleyCats. There will be no radio broadcast of the game on Tuesday.
The Connecticut Tigers are the Class-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play in the New York-Penn League. The Tigers saw a 23% increase in attendance in 2011, (the 4th highest in Minor League Baseball), and are in their 3rd season at Dodd Stadium. Tickets are now on sale!
