Auburn Doubledays News Release
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - The Auburn Doubledays (20-14) fell in two games to the Jamestown Jammers (18-17) on Monday night, losing 9-6 in the completion of a game suspended due to rain on July 3, and then getting drubbed 19-2 in the following seven-inning game.
In the suspended game that was completed on Monday, Auburn was trailing 5-2 with one out in the top of the third when the game resumed. Neither team scored until the bottom of the fifth, when Jamestown stretched its lead to six. With one out 3B Matt Juengel was hit by a pitch. He went to second on a single by LF Kentrell Dewitt, and then scored from second on a throwing error by Doubledays catcher Andruth Ramirez that sailed over 1B Estarlin Martinez's glove as he was trying to pickoff Dewitt at first. Dewitt would then score on a two-run homerun from 2B Anthony Gomez that sailed over the left field wall.
It was a homerun from Auburn's SS Wes Schill, which cut the Jammers lead to two in the top of the seventh. Schill came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs, and he smacked a grand slam homerun off of RHP Jake Esch over the wall in left-center field. The homerun was Schill's first of the season, and the second grand slam hit by the Doubledays this summer.
The final Jamestown run came in the eighth when RF Michael Marin struck out swinging to begin the inning but reached base on a passed ball. Another passed ball by Ramirez allowed Marin to go from first to second, and after a single pushed him to third, he scored on a fielder's choice force out at second base.
LHP Taylor Jordan, who started the game for Auburn but is now in Hagerstown, suffered the loss. Esch earned the win despite giving up four runs in 4.1 innings, and RHP Nicholas Wittgren got the save.
No save was needed in the second game of the double-header, as the outcome was decided after the second inning. In the top half of the inning the Doubledays took a 2-0 lead. Right fielder Wander Ramos leadoff the inning with a single to center field. That was followed by a double from 1B Carlos Lopez, to put two runners in scoring position with none out. Ramos scored from third on a wild pitch from LHP Beau Wright that also sent Lopez to third. Lopez then scored on a fielding error by SS Yeison Hernandez.
Jamestown quickly erased the 2-0 deficit and then some in the bottom of the frame, when they ended up sending 18 hitters to the plate. Each batter in the lineup scored at least one run in the inning, and they totaled 13 runs on 10 hits and four walks against three different pitchers.
It was RHP Pedro Encarnacion (2-1) who suffered the loss. He only lasted one inning and was charged for seven earned runs on six hits. RHP Brian Ellington (2-0) got credited with the win for the Jammers, He pitched two innings without allowing a run on two hits.
The Doubledays and Jammers battle again on Tuesday July 24 in Jamestown. Auburn will send LHP Brett Mooneyham (0-0) to the mound for his third start of the year. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
