Spikes to Acclaim, Lament Texting Tool with Ode to Autocorrect Monday
July 23, 2012 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
State College Spikes News Release
(STATE COLLEGE, PA) - In a world of spell check, downloadable apps, plug-and-go online translators and Siri from iPhone fame, there's one invention that trumps them all. On Monday, July 23, the State College Spikes will pay homage to the most helpful (and frustrating) smart phone feature with the Ode to AutoCorrect during the 7:05 p.m. game against the Batavia Muckdogs (St. Louis Cardinals).
AutoCorrect is a feature on most smartphones that detects misspellings, misplaced capitals and other grammatical miscues and fixes them on the fly; sometimes at the peril of unsuspecting texters. Those who have been victimized by this supposed convenient feature are invited to enjoy a light-hearted tribute at the ballpark.
Planned events, bits, clips and other promotions as part of the fun theme night include:
- Siri from iPhone 4S will serve as a guest public address announcer during the game
- Smart Phone Recycling Event - fans can protest the auto correct feature by recycling their old smart phones on the concourse
- An "AutoCorrect Free Spelling Bee" combined with a hot dog-eating contest
- "Quickest Text Without AutoCorrect" - fans will have to type a phrase without using AutoCorrect on their smart phones, take a screenshot of the text and upload it to the Spikes' Facebook page at www.facebook.com/statecollegespikes to win a great prize
- "AutoCorrect Confessions" - two contestants will compete for a prize from Rotelli's in State College by revealing their most embarrassing AutoCorrect moments
- "Top 5 AutoCorrected Spikes Player Names" - a countdown of the Spikes player names that AutoCorrect veers wildly off track in "correcting"
- Mascot Race with each competitor texting while running to show the dangers of AutoCorrect obsession
- Videos throughout the night highlighting the greatest AutoCorrect blunders found online.
Tickets for Monday's game, as well as each game on the Spikes' 2012 home slate, can be purchased by visiting the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park Box Office, by calling toll-free (877) 99-SPIKES, or by visiting StateCollegeSpikes.com to buy and print tickets from your home computer.
