Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI, Ohio - Cory Urquhart's second goal of the night 6:02 into the third period on the power play broke a 2-2 tie and send the Cincinnati Cyclones to a 3-2 win over Dayton on Wednesday night. It was the Cyclones club-record tenth straight triumph. The club has not lost a game since Jan. 13 at Reading.
Dayton opened the scoring 4:05 into the contest when rookie Masahito Nishiwaki collected his tenth goal of the season with a slapshot from just inside the right point. Corey LeClair and Ryan Reid had the assists on the score. The Cyclones leveled the scores at 1-1 at 16:45 with a rush from rookie Travis Fuller. Fuller came up the right wing side and fired a backhanded shot over the glove of Dayton netminder Rejean Beauchemin for his tenth goal of the season. T.J. McElroy picked up his first point as a Cyclone on the assist. Cincinnati outshot Dayton, 9-7, in the frame.
Cincinnati grabbed its first lead of the night 3:03 into the second period when Cory Urquhart pulled the trigger on a backhanded shot in the slot. It was Urquhart's fourth straight game with a goal, as David Desharnais and Jimmy Bonneau added the assists. For Desharnais, it was the 15th straight game that he has had a point.
Dayton tied the game at 2-2 before the frame ended when Matt Beaudoin netted his league-leading 30th goal of the season on the power play from the faceoff circle ro the right of Cyclones netminder Dov Grumet-Morris. Scott Kelman and Mike Walsh added the helpers on the goal. Cincinnati again outshot Dayton, 13-11, in the stanza.
Urquhart's second of the night and 13th of the season in the third proved to be the margin of victory.
The Cyclones began their ten game winning streak against Dayton on Jan. 16 in a 3-2 win. The club has outscored the opposition, 36-17, during the run.
Dov Grumet-Morris stopped 28 shots and is 19-3-1 on the season, the third-most wins of any ECHL goaltender. Grumet-Morris is 17-1-1 since Nov. 10-with the lone loss coming at Reading on Jan. 13.
For the first time in team history, the Cincinnati Cyclones are 27 games above .500, with a 35-8-3 record and sole possession of first place in the North Division-nine points ahead of second place Elmira. The triumph gives Cincinnati an 19-2-1 record since December 15. Dayton is 21-19-8. The magic number for clinching a playoff berth is 15.
Cincinnati is next in action on Friday (Feb. 15) with a 7pm showdown at Trenton. That game will be carried live on 96 Rock.
