Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

The Victoria Salmon Kings looked to get back in the win column tonight as they hosted the Fresno Falcons for the second game of a two game set. The Falcons handed Victoria just their third home regulation loss of the season on Monday night, clawing out a 3-2 victory. Billy Thompson started in net tonight for the Kings while Kris Mayotte started his second game in as many nights for the Falcons.

Fresno was first to find the score sheet as Brady Leisenring notched his 14th of the season over the shoulder of Thompson at the 4:07 mark of the opening frame. Daryl Marcoux and Luke Curtin assisted on the play. Mayotte remained solid in net throughout the period for Fresno and was able to preserve the Falcons 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

It was a different story for the Salmon Kings in the second period as Ryan Wade netted his ninth goal of the season just over four minutes into the frame to tie the game 1-1. Wade made a beautiful move around a Falcons defenseman and wired a shot past Mayotte. The Kings would take the lead less than a minute later as Milan Gajic ripped his 13th of the year behind Mayotte after being left all alone in the slot.

The Kings continued their offensive outburst midway through the second period as Wes Goldie found the back of the net on the power play. Kevin Estrada made a nice pass from behind the net to the awaiting Goldie in front. Goldie made no mistake putting home his 23rd marker of the season in the 500th game of his professional career.

Darryl Lloyd tallied the fourth straight goal of the period for the Kings at the 17:14 mark of the frame. Less than a minute later, Fresno's Kenny Bernard replied with the Falcons second marker of the night when tipped a shot past Thompson, but the period belonged to the Kings as they held a 4-2 lead after two periods of play.

Fresno had the advantage in the third period as it took the Falcons just 31 seconds to cut the Salmon Kings lead to one goal when Leisenring put his second of the night behind Thompson. Midway through the period, Leisenring would tally his second of the period to complete his hat-trick and tie the game 4-4. Mike Ramsay would then put the Falcons ahead at the 15:24 mark of the third frame firing a snapshot through the five hole of Thompson for his 11th goal of the season.

The Kings would prove resilient however, with just 50 seconds remaining in the third period and Thompson out for the extra attacker, Patrick Coulombe fired a shot that snuck behind Mayotte to tie the score 5-5 and send the game into overtime. In the extra frame, Ash Goldie would send the hometown fans into a frenzy putting home his 27th goal of the season just 19 seconds into the overtime period. The Kings leading scorer walked in all alone on Mayotte and put a backhand top corner to give Victoria the 5-4 win.

The Salmon Kings finished the game with 40 shots on net and went 1/7 (14.2%) on the power play while Fresno had a total of 34 shots on net and went 1/6 (16.6%) with the extra man. The Salmon Kings now travel to Las Vegas for a pair of games against the Wranglers on February 15th and 16th and then travel to Phoenix for a single game against the Roadrunners on February 18th.
