Urena, Zephyrs' Offense Fly by Iowa 7-0
July 4, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release
Metairie, LA - New Orleans right-hander Jose Urena spun a complete game shutout and the Zephyrs (39-42) pounded out 15 hits and seven runs as they trounced the I-Cubs (42-39) 7-0 in Pacific Coast League action at Zephyr Field on Saturday night.
Urena (5-0) fanned five and didn't allow an Iowa runner to reach third base all night as he allowed just five hits, one walk and one hit batsman on the evening. The righty was perfect through 4.1 innings before hitting Christian Villanueva with a pitch.
The right-hander received more than enough support as seven of New Orleans' nine starters recorded a hit, including Urena who helped his own cause at the plate by going 1-for-3 with a run, RBI and a walk.
Iowa's starter Frank Batista (0-2) was roughed up in his second start with Iowa after being promoted from Double-A Tennessee. The right-hander surrendered five runs on 11 hits in 5.0 innings of work.
New Orleans got their scoring started in the bottom of the second inning behind Isaac Galloway's RBI-single that plated Jordany Valdepsin who stroked a ground-rule double to right field a batter earlier.
Batista evaded trouble in the third but was met by a seven-hit onslaught in the bottom of the fourth as New Orleans added four more runs. At one point six consecutive Zephyr batters recorded a hit as they expanded their lead to 5-0.
The Z's did the rest of their damage off Armando Rivero by adding two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Austin Nola roped an RBI double to knock in Galloway before Reid Brignac drove in Urena with a sacrifice fly to complete their scoring.
The Iowa offense was held to only one extra-base hit, a double off the bat of Ryan Dent who led the way with a 2-for-3 night that also included an infield single.
Four Zephyr players had multi-hit nights for an offense that had scored and driven in the fewest runs in the PCL before Saturday night's game. Austin Nola went 4-for-5 with two RBI to headline their attack. Galloway and Kila Ka'aihue both went 3-for-4, with two of Ka'aihue's hits coming on doubles.
Iowa and New Orleans will continue their five game-set with game two on Sunday afternoon with the first pitch set for 4:00 p.m. CT.. The game can be heard live on AM 940, 104.5 FM, and live-streamed at Iowacubs.com. The On-Deck Circle Pre-game Show will begin 3:45 p.m. CT.
