Salt Lake Hosts El Paso on Fourth of July
July 4, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Salt Lake Bees News Release
SALT LAKE CITY - The Salt Lake Bees seek a turn-around month of July as they take on the El Paso Chihuahuas at Smith's Ballpark in game one of a four-game series beginning Independence Day. The Bees have never played a Fourth of July game on the road, and the team holds a 9-12 franchise record on the holiday.
The two teams last met in El Paso with the Chihuahuas taking three of four with two walk-off victories. Jett Bandy and Grant Green have led the Bees' offense against El Paso through the first two series. Green has hit the Chihuahuas for a .375 average, while Bandy has hit .350. Andrew Heaney, Adam Wilk and Kurt Spomer have accounted for the Bees three wins against El Paso this season.
Jo-Jo Reyes gets the ball tonight for his second start in a Bees uniform after the Angels acquired him from Campeche of the Mexican League on June 16. Used primarily as a starter throughout his career, Reyes is noticeably more comfortable when beginning a game. He holds an 8.53 ERA through four relief appearances with the Bees, while only allowing one earned run over five innings as a starter. Scheduled to be followed by Reyes in the rotation will be Alex Sanabia, Drew Rucinski and Wilk.
Alfredo Marte holds the Bees hottest bat, and has for some time. Since May 15, Marte has hit safely in 21 of 25 games, hitting .413 over that span. He has also collected 15 extra-base hits, 20 RBIs and has multiple hits in 15 games during the stretch. Marte's .360 season batting average would place him at the top of the Pacific Coast League leader board by .010 if he had enough plate appearances to qualify.
Salt Lake infielder Ryan Jackson brings home a bat that is hot at home. Hitting .276 on the season with the Bees, Jackson's average drops to .217 while traveling and spikes to .333 at Smith's Ballpark. In contrast, Grant Green looks to make better use of the hitter-friendly home of the Bees. The utility man owns a .221/.373 home/road split.
The Chihuahuas bring to town the No. 2 and No. 13 Padres top prospects according to MLB.com, Rymer Liriano and Alex Dickerson, respectively. Dickerson ranks third on the squad with a .304 average and is second in the PCL in triples with six. Liriano boasts a .285 average with 42 RBIs.
The Bees remain in Salt Lake until Tuesday, July 7 and then head to Las Vegas for five games. Tonight's game will feature a post-game Independence Day fireworks show.
