January 11, 2019 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
D.C. United News Release
United have acquired veteran goalkeeper Chris Seitz from the Houston Dynamo in exchange for United's second round pick (33rd overall) in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft.
"We are excited to acquire a player of Chris' experience level in Major League Soccer," Dave Kasper, United General Manager and VP of Soccer Operations, said. "He has over 100 appearances in this league and we're looking forward to adding him to the roster for 2019."
Seitz was selected fourth overall by Real Salt Lake in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft and has made 103 total MLS regular season appearances. He played for three seasons in Utah, recording 19 saves in seven regular season appearances. Seitz won the 2009 MLS Cup with Real Salt Lake.
On November 25, 2009, he was traded to the Philadelphia Union, an MLS expansion team that year. In Philadelphia's inaugural season, Seitz recorded 68 saves in 23 appearances. The following season in 2011, Seitz was selected by Seattle Sounders FC in the second stage of the Re-Entry Draft that year then he was immediately traded to FC Dallas.
Seitz spent seven seasons in Dallas, recording 163 saves in 67 MLS regular season appearances. The goalkeeper made 87 total appearances across all competitions for FC Dallas, recording 23 clean sheets in the process. Seitz was a part of the FC Dallas team that won the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and the 2016 MLS Supporters' Shield. He also won the 2012 MLS Humanitarian of the Year while with FC Dallas.
Seitz joined the Houston Dynamo on December 15, 2017 and went on to record 14 saves in six regular season appearances in 2018. The goalkeeper also played in three Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup matches with the Dynamo on the way to winning the championship in 2018.
The 31-year-old played collegiately at the University of Maryland where he made 39 appearances over two years. He won the NCAA National Championship in 2005 after posting a 13-1-2 record that year with a 0.89 goals against average. In 2006, he was named the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Defensive Player of the Year.
