Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, N.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans scored three unearned runs in the third inning, and held on for a 3-1 Friday night victory over the Carolina Mudcats at TicketReturn.com Field. The win was the Pelicans' ninth straight over the Mudcats (21-45). Myrtle Beach (37-28) held their lead in the Southern Division over Winston-Salem with the win.
Shawn Morimando (4-6) absorbed a tough loss, allowing the three pivotal runs on five hits over five innings. The left-hander struggled at times with his command, walking three. He finished with five strikeouts.
Jerad Eickhoff (5-3) hurled seven scoreless innings for the Pelicans, scattering four hits in the win. The right-hander struck out four, and walked a pair. Ryan Harvey recorded the final three outs for his third save.
In the key inning, Myrtle Beach started the rally when Rougned Odor was safe at first on a controversial fielder's choice. Attempting a double play, first baseman Jerrud Sabourin appeared to tag Odor, but the umpire ruled the tag was missed. Trever Adams followed with a ground ball that was misplayed by Paddy Matera at third, putting runners at the corners.
Joe Maloney singled home Odor for a 1-0 lead. Drew Robinson worked the count deep against Morimando, and then stroked a double off the left-center wall to score two more.
Trailing 3-0, the Mudcats moved only three runners into scoring position before the ninth. Against reliever Will Lamb, Bo Greenwell cracked a groundrule double to right-center. The fly ball bounced on the warning track and over the fence. Tony Wolters followed with a roller through the right side that moved Greenwell to third. Charlie Valerio singled home Greenwell on a liner to left.
Harvey entered to face the final three. Matera used a sacrifice bunt to move the tying run to scoring position, but a pair of groundouts ended the Mudcats' last hopes.
The Mudcats continue their series in Myrtle Beach on Friday night. First pitch against the Pelicans is set for 7:05 p.m. Carolina returns home on June 24th for a four-game series with the Frederick Keys. Tickets are available by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
