Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WILMINGTON, Del. (JUNE 13, 2013) - Brent Tanner recorded the game-tying and game-winning hits in the Dash's 5-3, 11-inning win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks in a series opener Thursday night at Frawley Stadium.
Trailing 3-1 entering the top of the ninth, Winston-Salem (36-31) rallied for a pair of runs to prolong the contest. With one on and one out, Grant Buckner blooped a double to left to push the tying runs into scoring position.
Josh Richmond followed with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit in half, and Tanner knotted the score with a two-out single to left on a 1-2 pitch. Winston had a chance to take the lead, but Joey DeMichele, who saw his team-high 12-game hitting streak come to an end Thursday, struck out to end the threat.
Winston would claim its first lead of the affair in the 11th. Cody Fassold (5-4), who blew the save in the ninth, walked the leadoff runner. After a sacrifice bunt, Wilmington (32-35) turned to Robinson Yambati out of the bullpen, and Tanner served the first pitch of his outing beyond the boards in right-center field to give the Dash a 5-3 lead.
Cody Winiarski replaced Terance Marin (4-5) in the last of the 11th and stranded a pair to pick up his eighth save in as many chances. He also closed the door on the Dash's 10th win in 11 games against the Blue Crew in 2013.
Marin earned the victory thanks to three and a third innings of perfect relief behind starter Jake Cose, who settled for a no-decision despite a quality start spanning six and two-thirds innings. Cose allowed three runs on eight hits in his longest start with the Dash.
Because of Myrtle Beach's 3-1 win over Carolina on Thursday night, the Dash remain two games back in the Southern Division with three days left in the first half. The Pelicans' magic number now sits at two.
The Blue Rocks jumped in front with a run in the bottom of the first inning on a Lane Adams RBI single. However, the Dash turned double plays in the first three frames of the contest to keep it a 1-0 deficit. Winston then tied the game in the top of the fourth when Buckner chased home Chris Curley on a groundout. It was the Dash's lone scoring play until the ninth.
Winston-Salem and Wilmington's four-game series rolls along Friday night at 7:05 from Frawley Stadium. Bryan Blough (4-4, 4.66 ERA), who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in his first outing in Delaware this season, toes the rubber for the Dash against fellow righty Kyle Smith (4-2, 2.59 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:50 on wsdash.com.
The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark on Monday, June 24, for a four-game series against the Salem Red Sox. For tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
