Carolina Mudcats News Release
Lynchburg, Va. - The Lynchburg Hillcats plated six unearned runs against the Carolina Mudcats over two innings, and pulled away for a 7-3 win on Saturday evening at Calvin Falwell Field inside City Stadium. The Mudcats (14-28) dropped their sixth straight to the Hillcats.
Navery Moore (4-4) picked up his second straight winning decision against the Mudcats. The right-hander allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings. He struck out five.
Nick Pasquale (0-2) suffered another tough loss in his second outing. The right-hander surrendered 10 hits and seven runs, but only one earned. Francisco Jimenez and Michael Goodnight combined to hold Lynchburg scoreless over the final 3.1 innings.
The Mudcats opened the scoring by plating two in the first. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Francisco Lindor stole second, and scored on a single to right by Jordan Smith. Up 1-0, Smith stole second, and raced home on a single to right by Luigi Rodriguez.
Pasquale kept the Hillcats at bay until the third. With one on and two out, William Beckwith bounced a routine grounder to second. Zack MacPhee had trouble with the ball, and the resulting error allowed a run to score. With the inning still alive, Lynchburg proceeded to plate three more runs on four straight singles. Kyle Kubitza had the big hit in the barrage with a two-run single, and the Hillcats were up 4-2.
Rodriguez attempted to get the Mudcats back in the game by leading off the third with a double. He scored from second on a base knock by MacPhee.
Ahead 4-3 going to the last of the fourth, the Hillcats benefitted from another miscue. Matt Lipka reached second base with one out on a single and stolen base. Emerson Landoni hit a grounder to third that was mishandled by Yhoxian Medina. The error allowed Lipka to score for a 5-3 lead. Robby Hefflinger's two-out hit scored Landoni.
In the fifth, Kubitza tripled, and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Matt Weaver.
Lindor extended his on-base streak to 26 on the first-inning fielder's choice. It is the longest streak for any batter in the Carolina League this season. Tyler Naquin extended his hitting streak to a team-high 10 games with a double in the first.
