Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (27-15), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, saw their three-game winning streak snapped Saturday, falling 5-4 against the Wilmington Blue Rocks (19-23) at Frawley Stadium. The Pelicans, 3-2 on the current road swing, will wrap up the trip with a rubber match Sunday afternoon against the Blue Rocks.
Wilmington's Kenny Swab hit a go-ahead, two-run home run off Nick McBride in the sixth inning, propelling the Blue Rocks to victory. McBride (0-2) took the loss out of the bullpen, allowing his second home run of the season. Cody Fassold (4-3) took the win for Wilmington, allowing one earned run on two hits over 3.1 innings. Malcomb Culver worked the final inning and earned his first save.
After falling behind 2-0, the Pelicans twice held leads in the game. Rougned Odor hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to put the Birds up 3-2. A half inning later, the Blue Rocks tied the game with an unearned run on a pair of two-out hits and a throwing error from Royce Bolinger.
Kevin Torres hit a go-ahead RBI double to deep right field in the sixth inning to put the Birds in front 4-3. He was thrown out trying to stretch that two-bagger into a triple. Swab's two-run home run a half inning later gave the Blue Rocks a lead they would not squander. Swab also hit a two-run triple in the second inning to give the Blue Rocks an early 2-0 lead. The Blue Rocks catcher drove in four of the team's five runs.
Kellin Deglan hit a two-run home run into the right field corner in the fourth inning to tie the game. Blue Rocks Manager Vance Wilson was ejected by home plate umpire Brennan Miller after play. Deglan leads the Pelicans with eight home runs on the season.
Right-hander Nick Martinez started for Myrtle Beach and allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits over five innings. Jose Monegro and Paul Schwendel each worked a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.
The Birds close out the three-game series Sunday afternoon with a rubber match against the Blue Rocks. Right-hander Luke Jackson (4-2, 2.48) will be opposed by left-hander Sam Selman (1-3, 5.93). First pitch is slated for 1:35 p.m. EST from Frawley Stadium. Pregame coverage begins at 1:20 p.m. EST on AM 1050 and FM 101.9 - Fox Sports in Myrtle Beach.
