Frederick Keys News Release

SALEM, VA - On a rainy night in Salem, the Red Sox scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and defeated the Keys, 3-2. Sean Coyle hit a sacrifice fly to center field in the eighth inning to bring home the game's tying run. Henry Ramos crossed home safely but with some controversy. The Keys coaching staff pleaded that Ramos did not touch home plate. In the end, the call stood and the Red Sox plated another run on a Deven Marrero RBI double. LHP Zach Fowler tossed 3.2 scoreless innings of relief out of the Keys bullpen.

The Keys struck first on Saturday night. Facing RHP Mike McCarthy in the top of the second, Jason Esposito reached on a one-out walk. Steve Bumbry followed with a single and Brenden Webb reached on a McCarthy throwing error to load the bases. Johnny Ruettiger drove in the game's first run with a RBI single to center field. Sammie Starr brought in another run on a sacrifice fly to center field.

Zach Davies started on the hill for Frederick and ran into some trouble in the game's first inning. Following a Keury De La Cruz one-out single to center, the Red Sox had the bases loaded. Davies buckled down and struck out Brandon Jacobs and Blake Swihart to end the inning. Davies only lasted 3.2 innings on Saturday night due to a high pitch count. Davies surrendered one run on six hits while walking two and striking out a season-high seven batters.

Zach Fowler relieved Davies with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. In his first appearance of the road trip, Fowler tossed 2.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. David Walters entered for Fowler in the bottom of the seventh inning. Walters retired Brandon Jacobs and Blake Swihart in order to end the seventh inning.

The Keys remained ahead by a run entering the bottom of the eighth in Salem. David Walters struck out Henry Ramos to lead off the inning but Ramos would reach via a passed ball. After Carson Blair walk, Jose Garcia put down a sac bunt to advance Ramos to third and Blair to second. With one away, Sean Coyle stepped to the plate. Coyle hit a fly ball to center field. Steve Bumbry made the catch and fired home. Tagging from third, Ramos ran through the tag at home and displaced the ball from Zane Chavez's glove. Chavez quickly pounced on the loose ball and fired to Walters who applied a tag on Ramos diving back into home. Home plate umpire Brian Miller ruled Ramos had already touched home plate and was safe. Keys manager Ryan Minor quickly came out to argue the call and was eventually ejected from the game.

Following the controversial call, Deven Marrero lined a RBI double down the right field line to put the Red Sox in front, 3-2.

Nefi Ogando struck out the Keys in order in the top of the ninth inning to close out the Red Sox one-run win. Ogando (S, 1) picked up the save. Out of the Salem bullpen, Matt Price (1-0) got the win while David Walters (0-1) got the loss.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Keys 3B Nicky Delmonico left the game with an apparent hamstring injury. After charging a slow roller to third base with one out in the inning, Delmonico exited the game.

Frederick will look to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the Red Sox on Sunday afternoon in Salem. LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (4-2, 3.35) will take the hill for the Keys while RHP Mike Augliera (4-0, 3.12) will start for the Red Sox. First pitch from LewisGale Field is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. with coverage on 1450AM The Source beginning at 3:30 with the Frederick Gorilla Pregame Show.
