Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Thanks to the terrific support from Manitoba's Ukrainian community of last season's Ukrainian Night, the Winnipeg Goldeyes organization is looking forward to an even bigger and better event this Thursday, July 2nd at beautiful Shaw Park in downtown Winnipeg.
On a night when the Goldeyes take on the Sioux City Explorers, this year's Ukrainian Celebration will begin with Sloohai on the Winnipeg Free Press Pre-Game Stage and a Polka Dance Contest. The Hoosli Ukrainian Male Chorus will perform the anthems and there will be a variety of Ukrainian music, dance and culture displays throughout the game. Contests and prizes will be part of the fun including a special "Go Goldeyes!" perogy-eating contest, courtesy of Sevala's Ukrainian Deli!
There are important fundraising aspects to the game as the Goldeyes are donating $4 from every group ticket sold to the Ukrainian Canadian Congress - Manitoba Provincial Council, plus $4 from the sale of specially designed "Cheer for Ukrainians!" t-shirts will also go to the Congress to help purchase medical supplies for Ukraine.
"Ukrainian culture is an important part of Winnipeg's community," Winnipeg Goldeyes general manager Andrew Collier said. "It's going to be a great night at the ballpark celebrating the colourful Ukrainian culture, while also supporting people in Ukraine through a tangible means."
The Shevchenko Foundation will be on hand to provide information of many of the unique aspects of Ukrainian culture at its display on the concourse during the game.
"I truly appreciate the Goldeyes organization's efforts not only in celebrating Ukrainian culture, but also in raising funds for the injured in Ukraine," said Denys Volkov, who initiated the fundraising effort for the Canadian Ukrainian Congress - Manitoba Provincial Council.
