Canaries Acquire RHP Will Rankin in Trade with Amarillo

Sioux Falls, SD-The Sioux Falls Canaries announced on Monday afternoon that the team has acquired RHP Will Rankin from the Amarillo Thunderheads in exchange for a player to be named later, and released RHP Byron Minnich.
Rankin was originally drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 17th round of the 2011 MLB draft, and appeared in 62 games. The 26-year-old right-hander was lights out during the 2012 season, going 1-1 with a 1.91 ERA in 25 appearances. In 28 1/3 innings pitched, Rankin allowed just six runs on 22 hits, while striking out 20 batters.
Rankin reached the Independent ranks in 2014, making 47 appearances for the Frontier League's Traverse City Beach Bums, going 5-2 with a 1.08 ERA. Rankin recorded a career best 57 strikeouts, allowing just seven earned runs in 58 1/3 innings pitched.
The righty began the 2015 season with Frontier League's Southern Illinois Miners, allowing 8 runs on 16 hits in 16 1/3 innings, before signing with Amarillo. Rankin never made an appearance for the Thunderheads before being dealt to the Canaries.
Minnich was released after making eight appearances for the Birds, allowing four runs on eight hits over 10 1/3 innings.
Rankin and the Canaries open up a three-game series on Monday night at home against the defending American Association Champion, Wichita WingNuts. Former South Dakota State University standout, Stephen Bougher (2-0, 5.06 ERA) will take the mound for the Birds'.
