Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers won in walk off fashion for the first time this season, on Ty Nelson's walk off homer in the bottom of the tenth inning to push the Crushers past the red hot Evansville Otters, 5-4, on Wednesday afternoon at All Pro Freight Stadium.

The win for the Crushers (5-6) was their first at home in 10 days, while the loss for the Otters (8-3) snapped a seven game winning streak.

On a day where the ball was flying out routinely, the Crushers and Otters combined to hit four homeruns on the day, and they combined for 23 hits altogether in a back and forth battle.

The Otters scored used the long ball to score their first run of the contest, as Shayne Houck belted a solo homer to give them a 1-0 lead and they went up 2-0 in the second inning on Chris Sweeney's first of two homers on the day.

Lake Erie then plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game. Joey Burney began the inning with a walk and made his way to second on a single from Anderson Hidalgo. A balk moved them both over and Burney scored on Ty Nelson's RBI groundout, before Emmanuel Quiles singled to right to score Hidalgo, tying the game at 2-2.

The Crushers struck again in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-2 lead. Jose Barraza's first of two hits on the day was a RBI single to score Trevor Stevens from second base, to give Lake Erie a one-run advantage, before the Otters answered with a pair to regain the lead in the sixth inning.

Sweeney hit his second solo homer of the game with one out in the sixth inning to tie the game, and Kurt Wert Jr. followed with an infield single, before scoring the go ahead run on Josh Allen's double to the gap in right center.

Lake Erie tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on a big two-out hit from Nick Zaharion. Hidalgo walked to start the inning, and made his way to second on a one out walk issued to Quiles, before Zaharion singled to center, scoring Hidalgo to tie the game.

As the game entered the tenth inning, Connor Little (0-1) retired the first two batters of the frame, before Nelson smashed a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left field, his second bomb of the season, marking Lake Erie's first walk off homer of the season to end the game.

Kolby Moore (1-0) worked a scoreless tenth inning to grab the victory, while Little took the loss. Six Crushers pitched in the contest, including Zac Treece and Trevor Longfellow, who combined to toss three scoreless innings in relief.

Every Crusher in the starting lineup reached safely at least once, while Nelson and Barraza led the way with two hits each. Barraza went 2-for-5, giving him four consecutive games with multiple hits.

The Crushers will finish their three-game series with the Evansville Otters at All Pro Freight Stadium on Thursday night. Left-hander Peter Gehle (1-0, 3.86) will start for the Crushers, while the Otters will throw right-hander Preston Olson (2-0, 1.50). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
