Last time out...

The Grizzlies scored nine runs in the fifth inning Tuesday night on their way to a 12-4 defeat of the Freedom. Florence actually grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth as Austin Newell doubled home Michael Pair and Jake Luce delivered a sacrifice fly to score Daniel Fraga. After scoring four runs on five singles and an error, Richard Seigel drew a walk to re-load the bases. Then Grant Buckner hit a routine fly to left field. Cody Bishop lost the ball in the lights and the ball fell in for a three-RBI double and it was 7-2 in favor of the Grizzlies. Ben Waldrip followed with an opposite field two-run home run to complete the scoring. Gateway added three more runs in the sixth, with Freedom relievers walking four batters in the inning and hitting two more. No hits were recorded in the frame. Florence did tally two in the ninth on a Newell RBI double and a Luce RBI single but it was much too late.

For Starters...

Chuck Weaver was named the Frontier League Pitcher of the Week for May 18-25. Weaver, in his 3rd season with the Freedom, dominated the Frontier Greys in his only start of the week by pitching 8 shutout innings and only allowing 1 hit while not walking a batter and striking out a career high 11. Weaver's dominant performance followed a solid outing in his first start, allowing 3 earned runs on 8 hits in 5 and 2/3 innings of a 10-4 Florence win over the Slammers on May 16th. His shutout of the Greys dropped his ERA to a stellar 1.97 for the 2015 season. Weaver shined in 2014 as he finished the season with a 2.65 ERA, good for first on the team and fifth in the Frontier League. His notable outings included a career high eight innings of one-run ball against Southern Illinois on June 14, seven innings of one run ball on June 28 against River City, seven innings of shutout ball against Gateway on July 3 and seven innings of shutout ball against Traverse City on August 13. In 17 starts, Weaver went six or more innings 13 times. Weaver was signed by the Freedom in June 2013 after he finished up his collegiate career at IPFW. He had a solid rookie season, posting a 4-2 record with a 3.70 ERA in 14 appearances, 12 starts. The Ft. Wayne, Ind. native started 13 games as a senior for the Mastadons, posting a 2-5 with a 3.57 ERA. Weaver threw two complete games as a senior and pitched 70.2 innings. He played two years for IPFW after transferring from Vincennes University where he was named to the NJCAA All-Academic team.

The right way?

Run this way...

On the Road...

The Freedom's loss yesterday continues their struggles on the road. They finished the 2014 season 13-29 away from home with only two road series wins. So far in 2015 they are 0-4 on the road.
