Evansville Otters News Release
Avon, OH- The Evansville Otters (8-3) saw their seven game winning streak come to an end against the Lake Erie Crushers (5-6) as Ty Nelson blasted a home run over the left field wall in left with two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning to give the Crushers the 5-4 walkoff win.
Things started well for the Otters as Shayne Houck homered for the second game in a row when he muscled a ball out to left for a 1-0 Otters advantage. Chris Sweeney would put the Otters up by a pair with a solo home run to right to leadoff the top of the second inning, but Will Oliver would quickly allow to lead to disappear.
Oliver, who struggled with control for most of the day, walked the first batter in the second inning and followed that with a single. A balk moved the runners to second and third and Nelson drove in his first run of the game with a grounder to second. The Crushers tied the game on Emmanuel Quiles' single to right just one batter later.
They would take the lead in the third inning when again, Oliver's control failed him. After striking out Justin Cureton to begin the frame, Oliver issued his second free pass of the day and then bounced one by catcher JD Dorgan to let the runner move up to second. Jose Barraza took a 1-2 pitch and bounded a ball up the middle and through to centerfield to push Stevens across the plate with the Crushers 3-2 lad.
But the Otters, as they have done so many times this season, battled back and scored two in the sixth to take back the lead from the Crushers. Sweeney hit a mammoth home run to left field in the sixth inning, his second of the day, this one clearing the lawn behind the wall and tying the game at 3-3. Kurt Wertz Jr. singled to give Josh Allen a chance to put the Otters ahead and he did just that, sitting back and doubling into the right centerfield gap and plating Wertz Jr. with the fourth Otters run.
Walks doomed Oliver one ore time in the sixth inning. A leadoff walk to Anderson Hidalgo and a one out walk to Quiles put runners at first and second for Nick Zaharion, who singled on an 0-1 pitch to tie the game at fours.
Both bullpens battled through the latter three frames with the Otters threatening with runners at first and second and two outs in the ninth inning, but Houck grounded out on a 3-1 offering. The Crushers put a man on third and two outs in the bottom of the frame, but Connor Little was able to get out of the jam.
The tenth inning was not as kind to the Otters and Connor Little. In the top of the frame, Nik Balog led off and was hit by a pitch, but did not move any farther. In the bottom of the tenth Little breezed by the first two batters before he made his fatal mistake; an 0-1 pitch was left up and in to Ty Nelson and the right-handed batter turned on it and ended the game with his second home run of the season.
Kolby Moore improves to 1-0 on the season as Connor Little receives his first loss and is now 0-1. Oliver went six innings allowing eight hits and four runs, all earned on four walks and three strikeouts.
Kurt Wertz Jr. has now reached base in nine straight games and Josh Allen in eight straight games while both Ronnie Richardson and Shayne extend their hitting streaks to six straight games. Nik Balog's eight game hitting streak was snapped, but has now reached base in nine in a row.
