Two-Out Runs Cost Saints in 7-5 Loss to Canaries

SIOUX FALLS, SD - Try as they might the St. Paul Saints couldn't get the final out of the inning on three different occasions allowing seven, two-out runs to score. In the end that was too much as the Saints lost 7-5 to the Sioux Falls Canaries on Tuesday night at Sioux Falls Stadium. The loss drops the Saints to 42-33 on the season.

Saints starter Jake Matthys breezed through the first two hitters in the first striking out Jordan Dean and David Bergin. Then the trouble began as Chris Grayson doubled to right-center. Jabari Henry hit a pop up to shallow right that Max Murphy couldn't quite get to and the single scored Grayson making it 1-0 Canaries. Henry advanced to second on Murphy's throwing error to the plate. Mike Hart made it 2-0 with a ground ball single into right that scored Henry. Maxx Garrett walked and Mitch Glasser's single to right scored Hart making it 3-0.

The Saints would tie it in the second courtesy of back-to-back walks to start the inning to Zach Walters and Dante Bichette Jr. Nathaniel Maggio then clubbed a three-run homer to right, his fourth of the season and second with the Saints, tying the game at three. The homer extended Maggio's hitting streak to nine games.

The tie game didn't last long as the Canaries got two more in the second. With one out Jordan Dean singled to left. With two outs Grayson doubled home Dean making it 4-3 Canaries. Henry followed with an RBI single to make it 5-3. Matthys would go just 2.2 innings allowing five runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out five.

Former Saints pitcher John Straka came on in relief of Canaries starter Chad Martin in the third. Brady Shoemaker extended his hitting streak to 11 with a one out single in the third. He moved to second on a single by Walters. A fielder's choice put runners at the corners and a wild pitch scored Shoemaker to make it 5-4. It was the lone run allowed by the former Saint who tossed 4.0 innings allowing one run on four hits while striking out three.

The Canaries got their final two runs off Saints reliever Ryan Schlosser in the fourth. Schlosser loaded the bases without giving up a hit, on one walk and back-to-back hit by pitches. Glasser came through with a two out, two-run single to make it 7-4 Canaries.

Andrew Thome tossed an impressive 2.1 perfect innings of relief for the Saints to keep the game close. Ryan Boelter added 1.2 shutout innings.

The Saints had an opportunity in the eighth when the first two got aboard as Shoemaker was hit by a pitch and Walters walked. Bichette Jr. sacrificed them over, but Maggio and Justin O'Conner popped out to end the inning.

In the ninth Joey Wong led off with a walk. With one out Kyle Barrett reached on a bunt single and Wong advanced to third when first baseman Jeff Malm tried to scoop the throw and it ricocheted towards the pitchers' mound. Burt Reynolds made it a two-run game with a sacrifice fly. Shoemaker then drove a ball to deep right, but Grayson made a leaping catch up against the wall to end the game.

The same two teams will meet in the finale of the three-game series on Wednesday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Matt Solter (3-4, 4.07) to the mound against Canaries RHP Jake Esch (6-5, 5.55). The game can be heard on Alt 93.3 FM.
