August 7, 2018 - American Association (AA)
Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
A four-run first inning was too much for the Sioux Falls Canaries. The Birds dropped their series opener with St. Paul 6-4 at the Birdcage.
Jeff Malm hit his first home run as a Canary, a solo shot in the ninth inning. The Canaries brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but couldn't cash in.
The Saints jumped for four runs in the first inning off of Canaries starter Dylan Thompson. Brady Shoemaker, Dante Bichette, Jr., and Justin O'Conner all had RBI singles in the frame.
The Birds countered in the fourth, loading the bases with two out. Jordan smith knocked in a two-run double to cut the Saints' lead to 4-2.
The Saints countered in the top of the fifth, making it 5-2 on a sacrifice fly by Zach Walters.
Thompson left the game in the top of the sixth with Nathaniel Maggio on third and two out. Reliever Ryan Fritze threw a wild pitch that allowed Maggio to score, giving the Saints a 6-2 lead.
Thompson allowed six runs (five earned) on 11 hits in 5.2 innings of work. He walked one and did not strike out a batter.
The Birds cut the deficit back down to three on an RBI double by Jabari Henry in the fifth. It was Henry's 31st RBI this season.
Malm's one-out homer in the ninth made it 6-4 Saints, and a two-out infield single by David Bergin brought Chris Grayson up as the tying run. Grayson grounded out to third to end the game.
