Arkansas Travelers News Release
Springfield, MO - The Springfield Cardinals exploded in the sixth and seventh innings en route to a 10-5 victory over the Arkansas Travelers on Saturday night at Hammons Field. Sending a total of 18 batters to the plate during two separate rallies the Cardinals turned the game around sending the Travs to their fourth loss in five games. First baseman Andrew Brown (20) connected on a pair of solo home runs and finished 3-for-5 to lead Springfield's 15-hit attack. Jeremy Moore slugged a grand slam (13) in the first inning and Charlton Jimerson hit an inside-the-park home run (6).
Starting their last road trip of the season with a loss, the Travs fall to 27-34 in the second half (53-78 overall) and have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. Springfield improves to 34-27 in the second half (72-59 overall).
Singles by Jesus Campos, Efren Navarro and Roberto Lopez gave Moore a bases-loaded opportunity in the first inning. He went the other way off a 1-1 offering from Nick Additon and popped the Travs' third grand slam of the year over the left field wall. Although the Travs threatened Additon in his remaining three innings, they left six runners on base through the fourth inning.
Additon lasted just four innings allowing four runs on eight base hits and three walks.
Tim Kiely didn't have much trouble over five innings except allowing a leadoff triple by Antone DeJesus in the third inning which led to a run.
Jimerson got that run back though on one of the most exciting plays of the season. Facing Ramon Delgado in the fifth inning and nobody on base, Jimerson smacked a drive to the warning track in centerfield. The ball bounced off the fence and away from DeJesus as Jimerson rounded third base and slid around Charlie Cutler's tag for the team's first inside-the-park home run of the year and a 5-2 Travs lead.
Brown signaled the coming rampage when he cut the Travs lead to 5-2 by taking Kiely deep to begin the sixth inning. He responded by hitting Aaron Luna two pitches later. After Chris Swauger singled, Cutler delivered an RBI single to right field knocking Luna home. Jose Garcia followed with a chopper to shortstop, but Andrew Romine had trouble with the transfer and they could only get a force at second base as Swauger scored from third. DeJesus hit a routine fly to left-center, but Moore lost the ball in the twilight sky and it fell in for a double setting up the Cards with men at second and third down 5-4. Kiely couldn't hold that lead as Pete Kozma stroked the go-ahead base hit, a two-run double past third base, on an 0-2 count.
In suffering the loss, Kiely (6-9) allowed six runs on ten base hits in 5.2 innings.
Robert Fish pitched the seventh inning allowing four runs on Brown's second home run of the night, and a three-run shot by Garcia (4).
Delgado (1-0) pitched two innings for the win. Delgado, Jason Buursma and Thomas Eager held the Travs hitless over the final four innings.
Time of game was 2:46 and the paid attendance was 7,490.
