Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - After a great comeback win that saw the Cardinals score nine runs over the last three innings, Springfield looked to make it two in a row with All-Star David Kopp on the mound looking for his 12th win of the season.
The Cardinals jumped out in front early on Michael Anton and the Travs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Pete Kozma drew a one out walk and after registering two home runs in the first game of the series, Andrew Brown added another home run in game two when he hit a two-run shot giving the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. Aaron Luna would then double up on Travelers starter Michael Anton by hitting a solo homer that gave the Cardinals back-to-back homers and extended the lead, 3-0.
The game then became a pitchers duel as neither starter would allow a run through the first five innings. David Kopp was able to wiggle out of trouble in the 5th inning as he loaded the bases with no outs, but got a shallow fly ball and two strike outs the get out of trouble still maintaining a three run lead.
In the 6th, the Travelers threatened again by loading the bases on three straight one out singles. But, again, Kopp settled in by striking out Jeremy Moore and getting Charlton Jimerson to ground out to end the inning without a run coming across. Kopp would leave after the 6th allowing no runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Traveler's starter Michael Anton left the game in the bottom of the 6th inning after 110 pitches in which he only allowed three earned runs, all in the first inning.
Reliever Blake King would replace Kopp and deliver the Cardinals two innings of scoreless baseball before giving way to closer Adam Reifer in the top of the 9th inning. Jeremy Moore led off with a single and moved to second base on a slow roller to third by Carlton Jimerson who was thrown out on the play. Moore noticed a vacant third base and made a mad dash. Xavier Scruggs throw to third was low and went down the third base line allowing Moore to score and score the lone Travelers run. Reifer shut the door completely on the Travelers getting two fly outs to end the game with a 3-1 score.
The Cardinals playoffs hopes are still alive and well as they have an 8 game lead on Tulsa for the 2nd best record in the division should NW Arkansas win both halves. Tulsa is in NW Arkansas for a three game series and their game was not yet complete when the Cardinals finished up their victory over Arkansas.
Springfield will finish their three game series Arkansas Monday night. The Cardinals will send right hander Brian Broderick (9-2) to the mound against right hander Ryan Brasier (7-10) for the Travelers. Game time is at 7:10pm at Hammons Field.
Winding down the final homestand, Monday will be Fan Appreciation Day at Hammons Field where everyone that comes through the gates will receive a ticket voucher good for any game in 2011. There will also be closing day fireworks presented by AM Pyrotechnics. For ticket information please visit the Hammons Field Ticket Office, online at www.springfieldcardinals.com or call (417) 863-2143.
