Toronto Argonauts News Release
Toronto - The Football Reporters of Canada have nominated 12 Toronto Argonauts to represent the Double Blue on the 2005 East Division All-Star Team. The Argonauts boast more divisional All-Stars than any other CFL Club. Here is the complete list of Argos on the East Division All-Star Team:
Offence
Quarterback - Damon Allen
Slotback - Arland Bruce III
Guard - Jude St. John
Tackle - Bernard Williams
Defence
Defensive End - Jonathan Brown
Linebacker - Kevin Eiben
Linebacker - Michael Fletcher
Defensive Back - Kenny Wheaton
Cornerback - Adrion Smith
Cornerback - Jordan Younger
Special Teams
Kicker - Noel Prefontaine
Punter - Noel Prefontaine
Damon Allen has been named a division All-Star for the third time in his career and an East Division All-Star for the second time (Ottawa, 1991). Damon finished first in the East Division in passer efficiency with a 102.7 rating, and threw fewer interceptions than any quarterback in the East. Allen also finished second in both passing yards and passing touchdowns.
In his first full season with the Argonauts, Arland Bruce III was spectacular. He was Toronto's touchdown scoring leader, finishing first in the East Division with 11 majors - Milt Stegall of Winnipeg was the only receiver in the League to score more often. He finished third in the Division in combined yards (1,880) and fifth among all East receivers with 67 catches for 1,205 yards. This is the first time Arland has been named a division All-Star.
An 11-year CFL veteran, Jude St. John enjoyed what might have been the best season of his career. He trimmed-down to a slim 309 lbs. heading into the 2005 campaign and emerged as the top lineman on the Argonauts' offensive line. This is the second time in his career that St. John has been named a division All-Star (2001).
Left Tackle Bernard Williams has been stalwart on Damon Allen's blind side. Williams might be the most powerful tackle in the East Division. His enormous frame stalled defences and opened huge holes for his running backs. This is Williams' first nomination as a division All-Star.
Jonathan Brown is in his second year with the Argonauts and has entrenched himself as a bonafide CFL star. Brown finished in a tie for first in the East Division in quarterback sacks (12) and scored a touchdown at BC Place when he raced back a fumble recovery. This is his first nomination as a Divisional All-Star.
Linebacker Michael Fletcher is one of the most versatile players in the CFL. He's coming off the best season of his career as he propelled the Argonauts into first place in the East. Fletcher finished third in the East in tackles and tied for first on the team in interceptions.
As the reigning East Division Outstanding Canadian, Kevin Eiben had another incredible season. His 113 defensive tackles tied him for the CFL lead and made him the first player in Argo history to record back-to-back 100+ tackle seasons. This is the second consecutive year that Eiben has been named a division All-Star.
One of the longest-standing active Argonauts, Adrion Smith quietly turned in the best performance among all cornerbacks in the CFL. Smith's intelligence and pure-athleticism forced opposing quarterbacks to make difficult decisions game after game. This is the sixth time in his career that Smith has been named a division All-Star.
Kenny Wheaton is one of the hardest hitting players in the CFL. He has been the most consistent halfback in the East all season long and is always one of the grittiest players on the field. Wheaton's 70 tackles were the most among defensive backs in 2005. This is the first time Kenny has been named a division All-Star.
Jordan Younger has established himself as the most dynamic cornerback in the East. His extraordinary speed allows him to play strong defence and outstanding special teams. Younger tied for the team lead in interception returns. This is the first time Jordan has been named a division All-Star.
Noel Prefontaine has once again been recognized for his multi-talented abilities as both the top punter and top place kicker in the East Division. The Argonauts have come to rely on Pre's foot to win games and provide them with superior field position. The durable kicker leads the East in field goal percentage and punting average. This is the second consecutive season Noel has been the East Division' s top kicker and punter. Overall, this year's selection marks the seventh time that he has been named the East All-Star nominee at punter and third time at kicker.
The 2004 Grey Cup Champion Toronto Argonauts are North America's oldest professional football club, having celebrated their 130th anniversary in 2003.
