Tulsa's Late Inning Heroics Down Riders

May 29, 2015 - Texas League (TL1)
Frisco RoughRiders News Release

FRISCO, TEXAS - The Frisco RoughRiders saw a slim ninth inning lead disappear as the Tulsa Drillers scored three runs in the final frame to steal a 3-1 win in the series opener on Friday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark. Frisco's Jorge Alfaro extended his hitting streak to eight games with a first inning solo home run, but that was all the offense the Riders could muster.

Drillers starter Jose De Leon's only mistake came in the bottom of the first on the homer by Alfaro. The Riders catcher has hit three home runs this week and has nine RBI in his last five games. De Leon pitched seven innings of one-run ball and allowed only three hits while striking out 11 in his second Texas League start. After the first inning homer, De Leon did not allow a Rider to advance past first base. He did not factor into the decision.

Frank Lopez struck out seven and did not allow a run over seven innings for the Riders (19-29). He pitched out of jams in the third and seventh innings to keep the lead intact. In the third, he allowed a leadoff walk to Lars Anderson, who eventually reached third base, but a strikeout of Jarek Cunningham ended the scoring threat. Back-to-back singles in the seventh inning led to runners on the corners, but a fly out to right field ended the frame.

Jesus Pirela pitched a 1-2-3 scoreless eighth inning to hold Frisco's 1-0 lead, but the Drillers finally found answers in the top of the ninth. David Martinez came in to attempt to pick up a save for the second straight night, but three of the first four Tulsa batters singled off the right-hander. Yadir Drake's RBI-single scored Anderson to tie the contest, and then a soft single off Daniel Mayora's bat brought home the go-ahead run. A throwing error by Luis Mendez scored an insurance run to give the visitors a two-run lead.

Frisco rallied in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with one out. But Jeremy Horst entered the game and struck out Jake Skole and Nick Williams to extinguish the threat and end the game. Horst earned his third save with the perfect appearance while Ryan Dennick (2-0) notched the win with a scoreless third of an inning of relief. Martinez (1-2) suffered the defeat as the Drillers (20-25) claimed the series opener.

Preston Beck had a big day at the plate, going three-for-four for Frisco.

The Riders will send LHP Andrew Faulkner to the mound on Saturday to face RHP P.J. Walters and the Drillers at 7:05 p.m. The May 30 contest is Military Appreciation Night at Dr Pepper Ballpark. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive Riders military jersey t-shirts. The game will also be broadcast live on Texas 47 (KTXD) as Alex Vispoli and Fox Sports Southwest's Anthony Andro will have the call.
