Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, AR - Chris Devenski tossed five no-hit innings and combined with Josh Hader to throw the first no-hitter in Hooks' history Friday night. It was a rain-shortened 4-0 win over Arkansas before 5,597 at Dickey-Stephens Park.
Devenski walked Cal Towey with two outs in the first inning and proceeded to retire the next 13 Travelers (27-20) before he was lifted for Josh Hader in the scheduled tandem start. In the sixth Hader walked the leadoff hitter, retired Drew Maggi on a groundout and then the rain started.
The game was called by umpire crew chief Mike Casicoppo after a 43 minute rain delay.
Corpus Christi presented Devenski (6-0) with a lead before he even stepped on the mound. The Hooks (32-15) manufactured a run after Tony Kemp singled to lead off the game and stole second base. Teoscar Hernandez bunted Kemp to third and he scored on Andrew Aplin's groundout. Kemp doubled home a run in the third inning against Arkansas starter Alan Busenitz to make it 2-0.
Colin Moran returned from the disabled Friday and played in his first game since April 30. After he ran out a ground ball in the fourth inning, he exited the game and Tyler White entered to play third.
Corpus Christi scored twice more in the sixth on a Conrad Gregor single and a White double play ball. Gregor has driven in a run in three straight contests and Aplin's bunt single in the inning extended his hitting streak to nine games.
Busenitz (1-5) allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits in six innings, while Devenski's final line included one walk and four strikeouts. Hader pitched one-third of an inning with one base on balls.
Friday marked Devenski's second hitless outing of the 2015. April 25 at Frisco he pitched six and one-third innings with three walks and eight strikeouts before coming out of the game. Jandel Gustave finished the game as the Hooks won 16-1.
Devenski, who become the Texas League's first six-game winner and lowered his ERA to 0.59, has thrown a no-hitter once before in his career. It came on September 1, 2012 with the Astros' South Atlantic League affiliate, the Lexington Legends, against the Rome Braves. That day he tossed nine hitless innings with one walk and 16 strikeouts.
Game two of the Hooks' three-game series against Arkansas is at 7:10 on Saturday night. Brian Holmes (1-0, 4.50) starts for Corpus Christi against the Travlers' Albert Suarez (4-3, 2.91).
