CORPUS CHRISTI - Former Sam Houston State star Matt Shelton benefited from a four-run sixth to notch his initial victory of 2015 as Tulsa beat Corpus Christi 5-2 Sunday at Whataburger Field before 5,232.
Shelton (1-0), who turned the game over to Ralston Cash after the uprising, allowed two runs, four hits, and three walks while striking out five. Cash worked two scoreless innings, recording three strikeouts. From there, the Drillers used Jeremy Horst in bridging to closer Chin-hui Tsao. Tsao fanned the side in the ninth to earn his second save.
Hooks starter Lance McCullers pitched exceptionally well against the Drillers for the second time in eight days. The No. 10 prospect in the Houston system by Baseball America matched his April 12 road performance with five scoreless innings. Sunday, he yielded two hits, walked three and struck out five.
Tulsa took advantage of McCullers' departure, the first four Drillers reaching and scoring off Mike Hauschild. Brandon Dixon and Paul Hoenecke collected run-scoring singles, Travis Witherspoon a ground ball RBI, and Peter Lavin a sacrifice fly.
Corey Seager and Brian Burgamy sparked the rally by singling and walking, respectively.
The Drillers added a run during the ninth against Mitchell Lambson, Jon Garcia's lead-off triple preceding a double to left from Daniel Mayora.
Jio Mier, who had three hits Saturday night, drove in the game's first run. Jon Kemmer began the home third with the Hooks' first hit off Shelton and came around to score when Mier doubled to left. Tony Kemp then immediately picked up Mier by singling in the other direction.
The Drillers and Hooks square off again Monday at 7:05, as Corpus Christi's Aaron West (0-1) faces Chris Anderson (2-0). All fans enjoy $1 Hot Dogs and Soda from Mrs Baird's and TLC Complete Care presents Faith & Family Night.
