Springfield Cardinals News Release
Corpus Christi, TX - The Springfield Cardinals struck for two tallies in the top of the eighth inning to take the 2-1 comeback win against the Corpus Christi Hooks before 4,925 fans at Whataburger Field on Saturday night.
After a 40-minute delay due to wet grounds, the Hooks (7-2) opened an early advantage in the bottom of the first against LHP Kyle Hald. With one away, CF Teoscar Hernandez singled himself aboard, before SS Carlos Correa worked a walk. 3B Colin Moran cracked the scoreless tie with an RBI single, propelling the Hooks ahead, 1-0.
Hald, though, dug in after the opening frame, blanking the Hooks through his subsequent four innings. The 2014 Texas League Midseason All-Star ended up with five strikeouts and only the one run allowed on five hits through five total innings.
RHP Chris Devenski also put in a good start for the Hooks, tossing five scoreless innings with only two hits allowed before giving way to LHP Josh Hader (L, 0-1) in the sixth. Hader kept the one-run advantage intact through his first two innings, while Cardinals RHP Corey Baker (W, 1-0) blanked the Hooks in the sixth and seventh.
The Cardinals (2-7) then authored an unconventional comeback in the top of the eighth inning. With two down, RF Nick Martini extended the stanza with a double to left field. 1B Jonathan Rodriguez then skied a pop up to shallow right field that 2B Jio Mier tried to get underneath. Mier, though, had the ball slip out of his glove, enabling Martini to score from second and Rodriguez to wind up at second on the error. 3B Alex Mejia came up next and also popped a fly ball to shallow right field. This time, RF Brandon Meredith raced in for the catch and momentarily had the ball in his glove. However, Mier was also going back from second on the play and collided with Meredith, jarring the ball loose and allowing Rodriguez to score the go-ahead run. Mier was charged with another error for causing the ball to fall out of Meredith's glove, and the Cardinals found themselves ahead, 2-1.
RHP Kurt Heyer (S, 1) took over to start the bottom of the eighth and shut the Hooks down the rest of the way. Heyer struck out three and allowed only one hit through two scoreless innings, closing the 2-1 win for the Cardinals.
