San Antonio fell victim to the long ball in a 9-2 loss to Springfield Sunday afternoon before a Wolff Stadium crowd of 6,797.

Sunday's series opener got off to a slow start offensively, with San Antonio's Dennis O'Grady and Springfield's Andrew Morales matching zeroes through the first two innings.

Missions' shortstop Trea Turner changed that in the bottom of the third when he followed Travis Jankowski's leadoff walk with a homer to left center. The dinger, Turner's first at the Double-A level, extended his hit streak to a team-high, tying seven games. Turner finished the game 2-for-4 and now has three straight multi-hit games.

Springfield quickly countered against O'Grady in their half of the fourth, tying the game at two courtesy of David Washington's solo homer to center and Anthony Garcia's RBI single.

Two innings later Washington ignited another Springfield rally, this time by drawing a two-out walk against reliever Casey Kelly (0-2). Next batter, Jonathan Rodriguez followed with a deep homer over the wall in left center to give the Cards a 4-2 lead.

In the top of the seventh, the Cardinals erupted for four more against lefty Chris Nunn, capped by Jacob Wilson's deep two-run shot onto the berm in left. The three homers were a season high for a San Antonio opponent.

Patrick Wisdom completed the game's scoring in the eighth with a sacrifice fly off reliever Luis De La Cruz.

Morales (1-0) earned his first Double-A win after allowing just the two early runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out six.

San Antonio (4-6) resumes its three-game series with Springfield (3-7) Monday, with first pitch slated for 7:05 PM. Justin Hancock (1-1, 3.60) will get the ball for the Missions, while the Cardinals counter with fellow righty Nick Petree (0-1, 6.23).

Notes: Jankowski's first-inning single extended his hit streak to seven (matching Turner's), during which he's batting .455 (10-for-22).
