Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Springfield scored two eighth-inning unearned runs to edge Corpus Christi 2-1 Saturday at Whataburger Field before 4,925.

It was the Cardinals' (2-7) first win over the Hooks (7-2) in six tries this season.

Josh Hader (0-1) retired Charlie Tilson on a ground ball and Breyvic Valera lined out to center for the second out in the decisive frame. Nick Martini stroked an 0-1 offering into left-center for a double and scored when second baseman Jio Mier dropped a pop up off the bat of Jonathan Rodriguez, who made his way to the keystone.

Alex Mejia then flied to right fielder Brandon Meredith, but the ball was dislodged as the result of a collision with Mier, enabling Rodriguez to cross with the winning run.

Chris Devenski set the tone for a strong pitching performance with a 12-strike, no-ball first to retire the Cardinals in order. Corpus Christi went to work right away against Kyle Hald, Teoscar Hernandez's one-out single becoming the night's first run. Hernandez advanced into scoring position when Carlos Correa walked and Colin Moran provided an RBI single.

Devenski has authored nine shutout innings vs. Springfield in two appearances while allowing six hits and striking out a half-dozen.

Hald scattered three hits and stranded five Hooks during the balance of his five-inning stint. He walked two and booked five strikeouts.

Both clubs failed to convert two-on, no-out situations into runs. Hald escaped such a threat in the fifth and Corey Baker (1-0) did the same two innings later. Hader then duplicated the feat.

The clubs combined to leave 20 men on base.

Hader (0-1), the tough-luck loser, permitted two hits over three innings, walked one and fanned two.

Meredith has hit safely in six straight for Corpus Christi.

The Hooks change opponents Sunday as the Tulsa Drillers arrive for three games. Lance McCullers (1-0) takes the mound at 2:05 against Matt Shelton (0-0).

Emergency Pet Clinic presents Bark at the Park and it's H-E-B Kids Day, so all children run the bases postgame.
